Abstract: A system for providing closed-loop control of a linear resonant actuator using Back Electromotive Force (EMF) and inertial compensation is disclosed. In an embodiment, one or more inertial sensors are used to estimate low frequency motion of a haptic engine moving mass and compensate for the motion using a feedforward model, thus providing a more robust closed-loop control system for controlling the moving mass when subjected to low frequency disturbances by a user, for example, shaking or swinging the device.

Abstract: In an embodiment of a system for closed-loop control of a linear resonant actuator, a system processor coupled to a magnetic field sensor is configured to: receive a magnetic field sensor signal from a channel coupling a magnetic field sensor and the system processor; receive measurements of actuator current and actuator voltage from drive electronics; receive a temperature signal from a linear resonant actuator, the temperature signal indicating a temperature of the magnetic field sensor; calculate a first estimate of mass position using the magnetic field sensor signal, actuator current and a magnetic model; calculate an estimate of coil resistance based on the temperature signal, the actuator current, the actuator voltage and a thermal model; and calculate a second estimate of mass position and an estimate of mass velocity based on the first estimate of mass position, the actuator current, the actuator voltage and the estimated coil resistance.

Abstract: An optical system includes a transparent display, which has a first side configured to be positioned in proximity to an eye of an observer and a second side opposite the first side, and which is configured to project an image into the eye. An image generator is configured to generate a sequence of images during respective display intervals, which are interleaved with blanking intervals, and to transmit the images to the transparent display for projection into the eye. A shutter is positioned on the second side of the display and having a first state in which the shutter blocks optical radiation and a second state in which the shutter transmits optical radiation. A controller drives the image generator and the shutter so that the shutter operates in the first state during the display intervals and in the second state during the blanking intervals.

Abstract: Optical scanning apparatus includes an emitter array, including a semiconductor substrate and a plurality of optical emitters, which are configured to emit respective beams of optical radiation and which are arranged on the semiconductor substrate in an array of rows and columns, the columns having mutually-parallel column axes. Abstract: An optical apparatus includes an optically transparent slab waveguide including first and second, mutually-parallel planar faces and an edge non-parallel to the planar faces. A radiation source directs a beam of optical radiation to enter the waveguide through the first planar face at an entrance location and entrance angle selected so that the beam subsequently exits the waveguide at an exit location in a surface selected from among the second planar face and the edge. A scanning mirror is positioned to receive the beam that has exited through the surface and to reflect the beam back through the surface into the waveguide while the scanning mirror rotates about an axis parallel to the surface over a range of angles selected so as to cause the beam, after reflection back into the waveguide through the surface, to propagate within the waveguide by total internal reflection (TIR).
