Abstract: Systems and methods for improving the efficiency of receiving and registering parcels arriving at a storage facility may identify the parcels and/or any items therein by scanning or reading one or more external markings on the parcels, and route the parcels to designated areas within a multi-dimensional buffer region on a first conveyor or other like apparatus. Within the buffer region, parcels may be positioned and/or rearranged on account of their respective priority levels. When a facility is prepared to receive the items within a parcel, the desired parcel may be retrieved from the buffer region, and the items singulated therefrom. The items may then be transported to an ultimate destination for storage, delivery or further preparation, and one or more attributes of the respective items (including a weight, a dimension or an image) may be gathered from the items while they are en route to the destination.

Abstract: Visual cues may be provided for the purpose of triggering the performance of one or more actions associated with a given task. A visual cue may include one or more characters or other markings on any relevant surfaces, as well as naturally appearing edges, contours or outlines within an environment in which the visual cue is provided. When one or more visual cues appear within a field of view of an imaging device, and the visual cues are recognized as such, a task relating to the visual cues may be identified, and instructions for performing the task may be provided. The task may be dependent upon a context in which the visual cues are provided, such that a single visual cue may be associated with multiple tasks in different contexts, and the performance of the task may be confirmed based on imaging data or other relevant information.

Abstract: Methods, systems and apparatus for determining stowability based on item-size categories are described. Embodiments may select a storage module for a stow operation based on accessing stowability information. Stowability information, in various embodiments may include stowability information for each storage module in a materials handling system. Stowability information may indicate a capacity to hold additional items in a storage module. The capacity may be determined according an item-size category descriptor, describing the quantity of items in each category of a storage module, and a storage module capacity module characterizing item descriptors of fully-stowed storage modules. In some embodiments the storage module capacity model is a function fitted to data points representing the values of item-size descriptors of fully-stowed storage modules. Embodiments may update the stowability information for a storage module in response to the removal of an item from the storage module.
