Abstract: Certain aspects of the present disclosure provide techniques for compact medium access control (MAC)-control element (CE) design for activating transmission configuration indicator (TCI) states. A method that may be performed by a user equipment (UE) includes receiving signaling configuring the UE with a plurality of transmission configuration indication (TCI) states, receiving a medium access control MAC-CE activating one or more TCI states, wherein the MAC-CE indicates whether one or more TCI codepoints are used to select a single activated downlink (DL) TCI state, a single activated uplink (UL) TCI state, or paired activated DL and UL TCI states, receiving a downlink control information (DCI) with a TCI field; and determining at least one of a receive beam or a transmit beam to use for a transmission scheduled by the DCI, based on the TCI field and the MAC-CE.

In some aspects, a user equipment (UE) may receive a first transmission configuration indicator (TCI) activation message that maps a first codepoint and a second code-point to TCI states. The UE may receive a second TCI activation message that maps the first codepoint and the second codepoint to TCI states. The UE may receive, during a TCI activation time for the second TCI activation message, a TCI indication message that indicates a codepoint identifier indication for the first codepoint or the second codepoint. The UE may transmit or receive a communication using a unified TCI state of a codepoint of the second TCI activation message with a lowest identifier, the unified TCI state being applied after an end of the TCI activation time for the second TCI activation message. The UE may receive, in response to the BFR message, a physical downlink control channel communication. The UE may set the new beam for the TRP for one or more channels or reference signals that share a unified transmission configuration indicator state with a channel or a reference signal associated with the index. Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communication at a user equipment (UE) are described. A UE may establish communication with a set of transmission reception points including a first transmission reception point and a second transmission reception point. The UE may receive a single control message including one or more respective timing advance indications for uplink channel transmissions to one or more respective transmission reception points. In some examples, each timing advance indication may identify a respective transmission reception point using a respective timing advance value. The UE may determine a first timing advance value for the uplink channel transmissions based on the one or more respective timing advance indications identifying a respective transmission reception point. The UE may then transmit, to the first transmission reception point, an uplink channel transmission over an uplink channel using the first timing advance value determined for the first transmission reception point.
