Sensing equipment for monitoring the space in front of escalators for the control of the drive has sensors arranged in handrail inlet caps of the escalator balustrades. Each sensor consists of a transmitter and a receiver and operates with high-frequency waves. The sensors monitor the access to the escalator in a specific region in front of the entry to the escalator, for example the region of the entrance plate. On entry into the monitoring region of a sensor the high-frequency waves emitted by the transmitter are reflected by the person or object and picked up by the associated receiver and the escalator drive is switched on.

An elevator system includes a roller arrangement and a belt for supporting an elevator car. The roller arrangement has two rollers with approximately parallel axes of rotation and structured circumferential surfaces engaging a complementary structured surface of the belt. The structured surfaces have alternating ribs and grooves. The belt is twisted about its longitudinal axis between the two rollers to keep the structured surfaces in contact and forms an under-looping for support of the elevator car.

Lightweight, low density magnesia-based tundish refractory compositions containing from 0.01 to 2.00 weight percent styrofoam beads and up to 5.0 weight percent paper fiber are disclosed. The compositions have excellent rapid heating, thermal insulative, vertical adhesion and deskullability properties. The compositions are useful as a lining applied over the permanent lining of a tundish, such as is used in continuous molten metal casting processes.

A screw lift comprises a lift car (2) which is movably supported on an upright fixed screw (4) and carries a nut (54) in engagement with the screw and a belt drive for rotating the nut on the screw and thereby driving of the lift car along the screw. The nut (54) is rotatably journalled in a lubrication and bearing housing (62), which is connected with the lift car (2) and out of which it extends with a portion, that widens essentially conically and carries a belt pulley (56) with a correspondingly conically shaped hole. The belt pulley and the nut are mutually somewhat axially shiftable. A pulse transmitter (130,132) is arranged as the only position, direction and velocity determining device for the lift for sensing the position of the nut on the screw and emitting signals corresponding thereto.
