The present invention is directed to the manufacture of plastic tubing exemplified by corrugated plastic tile and parts related thereto, in which molds for shaping an extrudable plastic material are caused to shuttle linearly forwardly and rearwardly with respect to an extruding source of said plastic material. Sequentially related to linear mold movement is opening and closing mold action, which is correlated to the discharge of plastic material from the extruding source thereof. Provision is also made herein during the course of linear mold movement for parking one or more predetermined molds at a location spaced from the extruding source.

In a molding process wherein a pair of mold halves pivoted on respective axes flanking a mold-closing plane are closed together scissor-fashion on an extrusion issuing continuously down in the vertical mold-closing plane, each of the mold halves is displaced during closing of the mold halves away from its respective pivot axis. Such displacement away from the axis is effected by means of a cam arrangement during the last stages of closing in order to insure that the mold cavities remain perfectly aligned with the extrusions being closed in them.

In a continuous blow molding operation, mold release of the newly formed container is facilitated by providing a conveyor adjacent to the point where the mold opens. The newly formed container is connected at one end by waste material to a previously formed container that is in the conveyor and is connected at the other end to material in a closed mold behind the mold that is opening. The conveyor haul off speed and the speed of the molds are at a relative rate which maintains a certain tension in the waste material between the previously formed container and the newly formed container and there is also tension in the material between the two molds. This tension facilitates mold release of the newly formed container upon opening of the mold. The speed of the molds is greater than the haul off speed of the conveyor by a rate which is substantially equal to the rate of reduction of length in the material between the previously formed container and the closed mold to prevent any deformity in the containers due to an excess of tension.

Disclosed is an improved hand-over-hand blow molding machine and the method for forming a chain of hollow, shaped article bodies of biaxially oriented, normally highly crystalline thermoplastic material from a tube of said material in substantially unoriented condition, but at an orientation temperature. The machine and method are characterized by an additional blow mold in tandem with one of the blow molds of the prior art two mold machine and method. The machine is operated so that each longitudinally stretched portion of the tube on which the mold pieces of each blow mold closes has substantially the same extent of longitudinal stretch or elongation. This is done by arresting the travel of the tube into the machine according to the distance of travel of the blow mold pulling it into the machine.

Two mold halves are constructed and arranged so that, when brought together they conjointly define the shape of the article to be blown and form an axially disposed mass of hot plastic. A blowing passageway in one of the halves or in one of the halves of a contiguous pair, is in communication with the aforesaid mass. When pressure fluid is applied it forces its way axially through the mass, into the enclosed parison and expands it to the shape of the mold.

A FIRST MOLD IS CLOSED ABOUT A LENGTH OF TUBING AND INTERNAL PRESSURE IS APPLIED TO EXPAND THE TUBING WITHIN THE MOLD TO FORM A CONTAINER. THE MOLD IS THEN MOVED AWAY FROM THE OVEN AT A RATE WHICH IS FASTER THAN THE RATE THAT THE TUBING IS EMERGING FROM THE OVEN THEREBY STRETCHING OR ORIENTING A LENGTH OF THE TUBING. A SECOND MOLD THEN CLOSES ON THE NEWLY ORIENTED LENGTH OF TUBING AND PROCEEDS IN THE SAME MANNER AS THE FIRST MOLD WHICH OPENS AND DISCHARGES ITS CONTAINER AFTER THE SECOND MOLD CLOSES. A

A plastic blow molding machine for the manufacture of bottles or the like articles and capable of extremely rapid operation, multiple molds being used to successively engage spaced portions of a continuously extruded vertically disposed tube. The closed molds move vertically with the tube during blowing, and each mold in succession opens to release the blown article, the opened mold returning toward the extrusion orifice by passing around the next consecutive, closed mold. This "hand-over-hand" operation forms a series of blown articles linked together by non-blown waste portions. To speed up the cycle, a purely mechanical drive system is utilized, eliminating any delays for limit switch operation, valve opening and the like. The vertical drive for the molds incorporates cranks driven from a common crankshaft, and the mold opening and closing movements are also driven from this crankshaft. Rotary valves on the crankshaft control the introduction and exhaust of blown air. The resultant apparatus is extremely simple, foolproof and the sequencing of the method steps is carried out automatically. The molds are refrigerated in order to reduce the mold-closed time, the mold itself receiving gaseous refrigerant directly from the evaporator of a refrigeration unit.
