摘要:
A multi-level information reproducing method is provided which can increase the degree of separation between distributions of cell boundary values to thereby improve the accuracy of reproduction. Specifically, in a method of reproducing multi-level information recorded on a track of an optical information recording medium by virtually providing cells at equal intervals and by varying a width of an information pit in a track direction or an area of an information pit, a cell boundary value (a value obtained by sampling a reproduced signal when a center of a light spot is located at a boundary of cells) is corrected based on cell center values of two cells adjacent to the boundary (a value obtained by sampling a reproduced signal when the center of the light spot is located at a center of a cell), and the multi-level information is reproduced based on the corrected cell boundary value.

A multilevel information recording apparatus is disclosed, which includes a control unit that inputs signals to a strategy generating unit and a laser drive unit based on the multilevel information being recorded, a signal indicating the playback and recording state, and a clock signal indicating the cell frequency that is in synch with the multilevel information. The strategy generating unit generates a pulse signal in accordance with the timing of the laser beam emission of a write pulse, an off pulse, a bias pulse, and a space pulse based on the signal from the control unit and the clock signal. The laser drive unit determines the driving current of a laser light source based on a delayed playback signal/delayed recording signal that is obtained by delaying the playback signal/recording signal for a processing time of the strategy generating unit, a pulse signal from the strategy generating unit indicating the emission timing of the pulses, and an intensity signal predetermined for each pulse.

A method for recording and reproducing information at multiple levels comprises steps of recording an information-coding pit at one of multiple levels in each of recording domains placed successively on a track of an optical information recording medium by utilizing combination of a width in a track direction of an information-coding pit and a position in the track direction of the information-coding pit, detecting reproduced signals at two or more positions in the recording domain, and reproducing the information according to judgment of the width of the information pit by comparison of the reproduced signals with a predetermined threshold width value and judgment of the shift direction and/or shift degree by comparison with levels of the plural reproduced signals.

The present invention relates generally to the storage of information on magnetic and/or optical storage media by using one or more novel approaches alone or in combination. These novel approaches are capable of using at least one code which may comprise more than two values (i.e., more than a “0” and a “1”). A first series of approaches for the storage of information applies generally to optical storage/retrieval systems (e.g., CD's, DVD's, etc.); while a second series of approaches applies generally to electric and/or magnetic storage/retrieval systems (e.g., magnetic, magneto-optic, etc.). Each series of approaches is capable of storing information in one or more codes, wherein such approaches permit, if desired, the use of at least one higher order code which is different from the traditional binary code of “0's” and “1's” currently utilized for the storage of digital information. Said at least one higher order code may comprise three or more optical and/or magnetic values or bits that are used to represent, for example, ASCII or Unicode characters that are currently represented predominantly by the traditional binary code. This higher order code may also be an analog or analog-like code.

An asynchronous transfer mode digital document delivery system is provided. A customer premise unit is configured to permit a customer to order and receive a data stream. A buffer is coupled to the customer premise unit to store the data stream before transmitting the data stream to a customer. A server includes digital documents stored thereon for delivery to customers through a switched ATM network. A control mechanism is employed to control a data rate of the data stream between the server and the buffer to ensure maintenance of a steady data stream from the customer premise unit to a customer during a loss of a physical layer between the server and the customer premise unit.

The present invention relates to a record carrier (10) for creating a multi-level ROM optical medium, wherein the record carrier 10 comprises a first recording layer (12) and at least a second recording layer (14). In accordance with the invention between said first recording layer (12) and said second recording layer (14) there is provided a physical barrier (16) leading to discrete pit depths. Furthermore, the invention relates to two methods for writing a record carrier to create a multi-level ROM optical medium.

Second digital information serving as copyright protection information can be stably and reliably read without any effect of a defect or pit missing on a disk-shaped recording medium. The second digital information is recorded onto a disk-shaped recording medium by wobbling a pit sequence recorded as a first signal. The second digital information is recorded so that a plurality of bits constituting the second digital information are allocated in a unit period of an identical sync signal contained in the first signal. During playback, the plurality of bits constituting the recorded second digital information are read a plurality of times every unit period of the sync signal, and information of the read bits is then integrated. Thus, information from a large number of wobbled pits across unit periods of a plurality of sync signals can be integrated to determine the bit values.
