Abstract: A counter capable of serially receiving and accumulating a plurality of input values. The counter includes an ordinal series of register wheels having carry means operable for effecting a transfer of a value representative of an input value of one from a lower order register wheel into a next adjacent higher order register wheel in response to advancement of said lower order register wheel past a predetermined point. Input means is operatively associated with the ordinal series of register wheels and operable for effecting an increment of advancement of the lower order register wheel a predetermined amount representative of an input value of one in response to a cycle of operation of the input means. The input means includes a permanent magnet which is normally biased in a first predetermined direction by a magnetic attraction means. Electromagnetic means is operatively associated with the magnetic attraction means for reversing the polarity of the magnetic attraction means whereby the permanent magnet will be biased in a second predetermined direction in response to an electrical pulse being applied to said electromagnetic means. The permanent magnet will thereafter be automatically biased in the first predetermined direction in response to the completion of the electrical pulse being applied to the electromagnetic means. Thus an electrical pulse applied to the electromagnetic means will effect oscillating movement of the permanent magnet to thereby effect corresponding oscillating movement of the input means to effect an increment of advancement of the lower order register wheel a predetermined amount representative of an input value of one.

Abstract: An electromagnetically operated register is disclosed of the type having a U-shaped pole piece with one leg extending through the coil. The armature is linked to a separate ratchet arm, which is formed of plastic or other lightweight material and biased to the locking position by a leaf spring. The core slidably engages in the frame and serves as the support for the coil and as a keeper for the ratchet-operating mechanism, with a single pin retaining these components in assembled relation with the frame. The number wheels and index pinions comprise a subassembly, including the two pinion axles, having journal and snap engagement with the main frame.

Abstract: An electromagnetic counter for digitally counting applied signal pulse numbers, including resetting mechanism for simultaneously resetting a series of digit wheels to their zero position. Actuating force for the resetting mechanism is applied to a rockable first lever, which has the same number of resetting arms as that of the digit wheels for rotating them to zero position and a lever arm for rotating a rotatable frame supporting a series of pinions engaged between each of the digit wheels into pinions'' disengaging position. There is provided between the lever arm of the first lever and the rotatable frame a second lever pivoted at its respective ends to them for transmitting the actuating force. The pivoting point of the first lever, respective pivoting points between the first and second levers and the second lever and rotatable pinion frame are substantially aligned on a straight line so as to make repulsing torque given to the pinions from the digit wheels to be small.

Abstract: Mechanical counter drivers are adapted to receive counting pulses and to perform a counterdriving operation in response to each of said counting pulses. Input signal generators are coupled to said counter drivers and arranged to be shifted between two positions in response to each of said counterdriving operations. Abstract: A meter for receiving and counting impulses from outside suitable, for instance, as a road pricing meter to be carried on a motor vehicle and to receive and count impulses to indicate the amount of use made by that vehicle of the road. The meter includes a spiral power spring which is coupled to a counter through an escapement. The escapement is operated by the signals received from outside to permit a desired degree of advancement for each signal. The energy in the spiral power spring is replenished by means of an oscillating weight winding the spring up through a pawl and ratchet gear.

Abstract: An electrical counting device with a rotary counter, a rotary drive assembly having a driven rotor with a verge for indexing the counter in stepwise fashion and a coaxial drive rotor in frictional engagement with the driven rotor, a coil torsion spring biasing the drive rotor in one angular direction and a tension wire conductor extending angularly about a drum of the drive rotor and connected to be heated and thereby lengthened with an electrical current to index the counter a first one-half count with the torsion spring and a remaining one-half count with the tension wire upon subsequent cooling and contraction thereof.
