摘要:
An optical fiber contact for transmitting moderate-magnitude optical power. The fiber contact includes an optical fiber having an inner core and a surrounding cladding for transmitting the radiation in the core. Additional surrounding layers including so-called buffer and jackets mechanically stabilize the optical fiber. The forward part of the optical fiber contact is surrounded by a transparent tubular member. The tubular member extends a certain length along the outer cylindrical surface of the cladding. There is no heating by power loss radiation, as the power loss radiation is leaving the contact as optical radiation. To disperse radiation propagating within the cladding, the cladding includes a roughening or additional layers of a transparent material. In case of additional layers of transparent material then the outermost layer should be roughened.

A light input/output terminal module 100 comprises a jacket tube 110 and a flange 120. A glass portion 20 of the optical fiber is inserted in the center portion thereof. To efficiently remove the leaked light in a cladding 22 to the jacket tube 110, the jacket tube 110 is made of silica glass or the same material as that of the cladding 22. The jacket tube 110 is fixed by fusion splicing or adhesion to the cladding so as to integrally unify the jacket tube 110 and the cladding 22. The beam diameter at the fiber end portion is enlarged by an optical component which fusion bonds the tip end of the optical fiber to the coreless fiber so that the optical power density at the light input/output terminal module is reduced.

A first fiber stub incorporating a first GI fiber is connected to a first optical fiber by a PC connection. The first GI fiber expands a beam diameter of light transmitted by the first optical fiber and collimates this light. A second fiber stub is connected to a second optical fiber by the PC connection. The second fiber stub, facing the first fiber stub across a predetermined gap G therebetween, converges the light transmitted from the first fiber stub using a second GI fiber incorporated therein. The second fiber stub transmits the converged light to the second optical fiber. When the first fiber stub or the second fiber stub is damaged, the first fiber stub or the second fiber stub is pulled out from a first sleeve or a second sleeve, respectively for replacement.

In one embodiment, an apparatus includes an optical fiber made of a silica-based material. A proximal end portion of the optical fiber has an outer-layer portion. The proximal end portion can be included in at least a portion of a launch connector configured to receive electromagnetic radiation. The apparatus also includes a component that has a bore therethrough and can be made of a doped silica material. The bore can have an inner-layer portion heat-fused to the outer-layer portion of the optical fiber. The component can also have an index of refraction lower than an index of refraction associated with the outer-layer portion of the optical fiber.

A fiber optic connector for coupling focused radiant energy from a laser to a fiber optic conductor includes a secondary transmission path and one or more reflectors and/or heat sinks for deflecting errant radiant energy to a location where it be safely dissipated. In addition, coupling of the radiant energy to the cladding of the fiber is minimized by stripping or at least partially removing the cladding to reduce the amount of cladding in the area that extends to the focal plane of the radiant energy source.

A method of coupling a high-power optical signal between an optical fiber and a mating optical component, the optical signal ranging in wavelength from x to y, and having a first diameter while propagating in a mode field within the fiber, the method comprising: (a) converting the high-power optical signal between the first diameter in the fiber and a second diameter significantly greater than the first diameter using a GRIN lens fused to an end of the fiber, the GRIN lens having a diameter substantially the same as that of the optical fiber and a length l complying with the following equation: ¼x+½nx≦l≦¼y+½ny, wherein n=0, 1, 2, 3 . . . 100; (b) establishing physical contact between the GRIN lens and a coupling surface of the mating optical component; and (c) while the high-power optical signal is at the second diameter, optically coupling it between the lens and the mating optical component.

A method of mating optical fibers includes the steps of coupling a first end portion of a first optical fiber to a first connector, coupling a second end portion of a second optical fiber to a second connector, disposing fluid between the first end portion and the second end portion, and placing an end surface of the first end portion and an end surface of the second end portion into contact with each other at a contact point, to thereby cause the fluid to flow away from the contact point.

An optical coupling is useful for lessening negative effects associated with launching high power signals from a single mode optical fiber. The coupling has a mono-mode optical fiber fused axially to a second optically homogeneous glass fiber having no core and no optical power, the latter fiber dimensioned such that light propagating from the optical fiber's core diverges and passes rectilinearly therethrough without touching the side walls of the second fiber. The second fiber is optically coupled with a GRIN lens. Typically, the mono-mode fiber and the second fiber have the same diameter and are mounted in a ferrule.

A method and apparatus which can couple a high intensity point source, such as from a single fiber, to a fiber bundle. A bundle of fibers is fed though a hole in the light post. A removable potting compound is applied to the tip of the bundle to hold the fibers together for polishing. The tip of the bundle is polished and then the potting compound is removed from the tip of the bundle. A window is placed over a light inlet of the hole so as to seal the bundle. A point source cable introduces a point source of light to the bundle of fibers. A ferrule is provided around the point source cable, having a diameter sized corresponding to a diameter of said light post. The ferrule and the bundle of fibers are clamped with a split sleeve which extends therebetween.
