Disclosed are a coating composition (A) for preventing adhesion of organisms which comprises as its vehicle component a homopolymer or a copolymer, the homopolymer being one prepared by homopolymerizing a phenol-modified unsaturated monomer obtained by reacting (a) an unsaturated monomer containing epoxy group and/or hydroxyl group with (b) an addition reaction product of a phenolic compound with a compound having one carboxylic anhydride group per molecule, and the copolymer being one prepared by copolymerizing said phenol-modified unsaturated monomer and a radically polymerizable unsaturated monomer, and also a coating composition (B) for preventing adhesion of organisms which comprises as its vehicle component a phenol-modified resin prepared by reacting (c) a resin containing epoxy group and/or hydroxyl group with (b) an addition reaction product of a phenolic compound with a compound having one carboxylic anhydride group per molecule.Also disclosed is a method for preventing adhesion of organisms, characterized by coating a substrate with the coating composition (A) or (B).

The present invention provides a topcoating composition prepared by incorporating a specified organosilicate and/or its condensate into a specified organic coating composition, a film formed from said topcoating composition being such that a surface of the film, which has been subjected to an acid treatment, shows a contact angle to water of 70.degree. or less; and a film-forming process which comprises coating said topcoating composition onto a substrate to form a film, followed by treating the surface of the film with an acid. The present invention provides such effects that the film obtained according to the present invention shows good weather resistance and good stain resistance.

The invention provides a lactone-modified organopolysiloxane compound represented by the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are the same or different and each represents a methyl group, an ethyl group, a n-propyl group, an isopropyl group or a group represented by the formula ##STR2## wherein R.sub.5 is a methyl group, an ethyl group, a n-propyl group or an isopropyl group, X is a saturated divalent hydrocarbon group having 2 to 14 carbon atoms, and m is an integer of 1 to 3, provided that at least one of R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 is a group represented by the formula ##STR3## wherein R.sub.5, X and m are as defined above, and n is an integer of 1 to 100. The polysiloxane compound of the invention is excellent in compatibility with various organic resins.

A vehicle composition for coating materials is disclosed. The vehicle composition includes an organic liquid, finely divided particles of a vinyl polymer dispersed in the organic liquid and a polymer of alkoxysiloxane having an alkoxy group of 3 to 5 carbon atoms dissolved in the organic liquid. The vehicle composition is prepared by polymerizing at least one vinyl monomer in the organic liquid which has the alkoxysiloxane polymer dissolved therein, the organic liquid being capable of dissolving the vinyl monomer but incapable of dissolving the vinyl polymer obtained therefrom.
