Abstract: A billboard includes a support structure and first and second lighting assemblies. Each lighting assembly includes a number of circuits boards arranged in a common orientation. Each circuit board of the first lighting assembly is planar and has a number of LEDs and optical elements attached thereto. The LEDs are thermally coupled to a first heat sink. The LEDs are arranged in rows on each circuit board, with each row including a number of LEDs mounted so that all of the LEDs are arranged in a common orientation. Each optical element is disposed over only one associated LED. The optical elements are arranged to direct the light across a portion of the display surface.

Abstract: A lighting device includes a heat sink having fins on a first side and a mounting surface of a second side opposite the first side, a substrate attached to the mounting surface, a number of LEDs attached to the substrate, and a single transparent substrate with a number of optical elements, each optical element overlying an associated one of the LEDs. The device configured to direct light from the LEDs towards an area in a manner that does not create hot spots or result in dead spots on the area regardless of whether all of the LEDs of the plurality of LEDs or some of the LEDs of the plurality of LEDs are functional.

Abstract: An apparatus includes a display surface having a substantially rectangular region with a width of twenty-four feet. The region of the display surface has visual media content displayed thereon. A first lighting unit includes a number of light emitting diodes (LEDs) and optical elements arranged over the plurality of LEDs such that each optical element overlies only one associated LED. The first lighting unit is configured to illuminate the region of the display surface so that the visual media content on the region of the display surface can be viewed without additional lighting. A second lighting unit is laterally spaced from the first lighting unit along the width of region of the display surface. The second lighting unit includes a number of LEDs and optical elements arranged over the plurality of LEDs such that each optical element overlies only one associated LED.

Abstract: A lighting assembly includes LEDs arranged at a surface of a substrate, and optical elements proximate the LEDs such that each optical element overlies a single LED and each LED underlies a single optical element. Each optical element includes a first part, a second part intersecting the first part such that a normal to surface of the second part intersects a normal to the surface of the first part, and a third part extending away from the associated LED beyond a region between the first and second part. The LEDs and optical elements are configured such that light from each LED is directed towards an area to be illuminated in a uniform pattern covering the area.

Abstract: A light assembly includes a thermally conductive support structure, a plurality of light emitting diodes (LEDs) attached to a circuit board and thermally coupled to a heat sink and a single transparent substrate with a corresponding plurality of optical elements over the LEDs. Each of the optical elements include a first portion configured to direct light in a second direction, a second portion configured to direct light in a second lateral direction, and a third portion configured to direct light in a third direction.

Abstract: A lighting assembly includes a plurality of light emitting diodes (LEDs) and a plurality of optical elements, each proximate an associated one of the LEDs. Each optical element includes a first portion, a second portion which intersects with the first portion, a third portion extending beyond a region between the first portion and the second portion in a direction away from the associated LED, and a fourth portion positioned proximate the respective LED below the first, second and third portions. The first and second portions are shaped such that at least one surface normal to the first portion intersects with at least one surface normal to the second portion.

Abstract: A method can be used to illuminate a surface that includes a number of non-overlapping portions. The method includes simultaneously illuminating each of the portions so that the surface is substantially uniformly lit. Each portion is illuminated by a respective lighting assembly. Each lighting assembly includes a plurality of LEDs and a plurality of optical elements proximate the plurality of LEDs. For each lighting assembly, when all LEDs of the lighting assembly are operating, the entire portion of the surface is illuminated with an illumination level and a uniformity. Failure of one or more LEDs of the lighting assembly will cause the illumination level of light impinging the portion of the surface to decrease while the uniformity of light impinging the portion of the surface remains substantially the same.

Abstract: A light assembly includes a thermally conductive support structure configured for outdoor use. LEDs are attached to a circuit board and thermally coupled to a heat sink. A single transparent substrate overlies the LEDs and includes a number of optical elements. Each of the plurality of optical elements is configured to direct light from each LED in three primary directions. Each optical element includes a first portion, a second portion, and a third portion. The first, second and third portions of each optical element are configured to direct light from the associated LED in a first, second and third primary direction, respectively. The first primary direction is a lateral direction, the second primary direction is also a lateral direction and the third primary direction is approximately orthogonal to the first and second lateral directions.
