Abstract: A text recognition apparatus and method of the portable terminal is provided for recognizing text image selected by a pen on a screen image as text. The text recognition method of the present invention includes displaying an image; configuring a recognition area on the image in response to a gesture made with a pen; recognizing text in the recognition area; displaying the recognized text and action items corresponding to the text; and executing, when one of the action items is selected, an action corresponding to the selected action item.
