A method for treating a substrate is disclosed in which a propellant stream is passed through a channel and directed toward a substrate. Substrate pre-marking or post-marking treatment material is controllably introduced into the propellant stream and imparted with sufficient kinetic energy thereby to be made incident upon a substrate. A multiplicity of channels for directing the propellant and treatment material allow for high throughput, high resolution in-situ treatment. Marking materials and treatment materials may be introduced into the channel and mixed therein prior to being made incident on the substrate, or mixed or superimposed on the substrate without registration. One example is a single-pass, full-color printer.

A scavengeless/non-interactive development system for use in highlight color imaging. The use of dual frequencies for the AC voltages applied between the wires and donor and donor and image receiver of a scavengeless development system allows for greater gap latitude without degradation of line development. Dual frequency refers to the application of an AC voltage at one frequency to the wire electrodes and the simultaneous application of a different frequency AC to the donor structure for insuring proper positioning of the toner cloud relative to the imaging surface.A relatively low frequency, for example, 2 to 5 kHz AC is applied betweeen the donor and the imaging surface. By applying a relatively low frequency AC to the donor roll, the development gap (or electrode wire to image surface) latitude is enhanced thereby allowing larger gaps to accommodate manufacturing and machine setup tolerances, such as donor roll runout. Application of a high frequency AC, for example, 5 to 15 kHz, between the electrodes and toned donor roll to generate a toner cloud substantially improves the uniformity of development by minimizing wire vibration.

AC biased electrodes positioned in close proximity to a magnetic brush structure carrying a two-component developer cause a controlled cloud of toner to be generated which noninteractively develops an electrostatic image. The two-component developer includes mixture of carrier beads and toner particles. By making the two-component developer magnetically tractable, the developer is transported to the development zone as in conventional magnetic brush development where the development roll or shell of the magnetic brush structure rotates about stationary magnets positioned inside the shell.

Apparatus for dispensing particulate material has a substantially enclosed rigid housing with longitudinally disposed walls and parallel side walls having an opening in the housing for dispensing particulate material therefrom and a flexible sheet-like inner liner conformable to at least some of the longitudinal walls of the housing, one end of which is attached to a portion of the housing the other end of which is attached to a take-up roll for the inner liner which conforms to the longitudinal walls when the housing is filled with particulate material. The portion of the housing to which the inner liner is attached, the take-up roll and the dispensing opening are disposed relative to each other such that as the sheet-like inner liner is taken up by the take-up roll the particulate material is transported by the inner liner toward the dispensing opening and dispensed therethrough. In a preferred embodiment, the particulate dispenser is a developer housing for an electrostatographic printing machine.

In the first step of the process a mixture of magnetic carrier beads and a conductive powder is prepared in the sump of the deposition unit; the mixture forms a magnetic brush on the sleeve of the deposition unit. In the second step of the process, the substrate is positioned away from the magnetic brush to form an air gap. In the third step of the process, a voltage is applied between the substrate and the sleeve of the deposition unit in order to produce a large asymmetry between the magnetic brush and said substrate such that the electric field at the magnetic brush is at least 3.0 times as great as the electric field at the substrate. In the fourth step of the process, conductive powder is deposited onto the substrate.
