Abstract: A system includes an overflow distributor (200) including a weir (245, 247). The system further includes a thermal exchange unit positioned in proximity to the weir. The thermal exchange unit (300) includes a tubular focusing member (310) and a thermal member (330) disposed at least partially within a lumen of the focusing member. The focusing member extends distally beyond a distal end of the thermal member by a distance It. In an embodiment the thermal exchange unit comprises several focusing members and thermal members to control a thermal profile of a glass stream flowing over the weir, particularly of a portion of the glass stream in contact with the weir.

Abstract: A glass forming apparatus and method include a weir on at least a first side of a molten core glass reservoir. The weir includes an inclined surface that, in the intended direction of molten glass flow, slopes downward in the vertical direction while extending away from the molten core glass reservoir in the horizontal direction. A source of molten clad glass is configured above the glass forming apparatus such that when molten clad glass is flowing down and molten core glass is flowing over the weir, the molten clad glass drops onto the molten core glass at a highest upstream contact point that is located directly above the inclined surface of the weir.

Abstract: A system includes an overflow distributor and a support member. The overflow distributor includes a first sidewall, a second sidewall opposite the first sidewall, and a floor extending between the opposing first and second sidewalls. Interior surfaces of the first sidewall, the second sidewall, and the floor cooperatively define a trough configured to receive molten glass. Exterior surfaces of the first sidewall and the second sidewall are configured to direct molten glass that overflows the trough. The support member is disposed between the opposing first and second sidewalls of the overflow distributor and abutting an exterior surface of the floor of the overflow distributor.

Abstract: An apparatus for forming glass tubing is described. The apparatus for forming glass tubing comprises an endless former with an outer surface and an inner passage defining an inner surface. The apparatus for forming glass tubing further comprises two chambers from which molten glass may flow. One chamber flows molten glass to the outer surface of the endless former and another chamber flows molten glass to the inner surface of the endless former. The two flows of molten glass meet at the bottom of the former to form glass tubing.

Abstract: An apparatus for forming a glass ribbon includes a forming body with opposing first and second forming surfaces. An end dam assembly includes a first forming dam wall extending in a draw direction along a first end of the first forming surface. A second forming dam wall can extend in the draw direction along a first end of the second forming surface. A first bridge dam wall can be disposed on an upper surface of the forming body and extend between and join the first forming dam wall and the second forming dam wall. Each of the forming body and the end dam assembly is formed from a refractory material. A method includes flowing a molten glass through a trench defined by forming dam walls extending in the draw direction along opposing first and second ends of the forming surface.

Abstract: According to one embodiment, a method of forming a laminated glass ribbon may include flowing a molten glass core composition and a molten glass cladding composition in a vertically downward direction. The molten glass core composition may be contacted with the molten glass cladding composition to form the laminated glass ribbon comprising a glass core layer formed from the molten glass core composition and a glass cladding layer formed from the molten glass cladding composition. Core beads located proximate an edge of the glass core layer and clad beads located proximate an edge of the glass cladding layer may be compressed while the glass core layer and the glass cladding layers have viscosities greater than or equal to the viscosity at their softening points as the laminated glass ribbon is drawn in the vertically downward direction.
