Abstract: A transmitter for transmitting data, using a discrete multi-tone modulation technique, to one or more receiver devices, each of which is connected to the transmitter device via at least one respective pair of wires, each receiver device being operable to receive signals detected as a change over time in the potential difference across the local ends of each respective pair of wires extending between the receiver and the transmitter device, is operable to transmit signals onto the wires extending between the transmitter device and the one or more receiver devices in a plurality of different modes, over a plurality of different channels, the different modes including phantom and differential modes and the different channels including a first set of phantom channels. Abstract: A telecommunications access network comprises a primary aggregation point in the form of an exchange, a plurality of optic fiber to metallic pair interface aggregation points which may be in the form of Distribution Point Units (DPUs) each of which is connected to the primary aggregation point by a respective optical fiber connection, and a plurality of terminating devices which may be in the form of customer premises equipment (CPE) devices, each of which is connected to a respective one of the optic fiber to metallic pair interface aggregation points by a respective twisted metallic pair connection. Abstract: Apparatus for communicating data between a transmitter device 16 and a first 51 and a second 52 receiver device, the receiver devices being connected, in use, to the transmitter device via a first 21 and a second 22 pair of wires respectively. Each receiver device is operable to receive signals detected as a change over time in the potential difference across the local ends of each respective pair of wires extending between the respective receiver device and the transmitter device, and the transmitter device is operable to transmit signals onto the wires at the transmitter ends thereof in order to transmit signals via a direct differential mode to each respective receiver via its respective pair of wires. The transmitter device is additionally operable to transmit signals to both receivers via a single common indirect channel and comprises: a channel estimator 1670, 1680, 1690 for estimating the extent of coupling between the common indirect channel and each of the receiver devices based on readings received by the transmitter device from the receiver devices; and a processor 1690 for determining a plurality of weighting values in dependence upon the estimated extents of the couplings; the transmitter 16 being operable to transmit a first signal via the direct differential mode over the first pair 21, to transmit a second signal via the direct differential mode over the second pair 22 and to transmit a combined signal onto the indirect channel, wherein the combined signal comprises a weighted sum of the first and second signals, the weighting being done in accordance with the determined weighting values; and wherein the transmitter further comprises a precoder 1640 for precoding the first, second and combined signals to pre-compensate them for the expected effects of cross-talk from the other ones of these signals, wherein the pre-coding of each signal, including the first and the second signals, is performed in dependence upon the determined weighting values.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for transmitting data from a transmitter device to one or more receiver devices connected to the transmitter device via a respective wire connection, the transmitter device being operable to transmit signals onto the wire connections and a further wire connection at different tones, the method comprising: for each tone, measuring electromagnetic coupling between the further wire connection and each of the wire connections and using the measurements, identifying a wire connection that most strongly receives crosstalk interference from the further wire connection; based on the identifications, for each tones, allocating signals transmitted on the further wire connection as supporting signals for a particular wire connection; transmitting a first signal onto the particular wire connection that has been allocated a supporting signal; and transmitting a second signal onto the further wire connection, thereby to cause crosstalk interference in the particular wire connection transmitting the first signal.

Abstract: A system (100), (200), (310), (320) for transmitting data between an upstream transceiver (100) and a downstream transceiver (200) via two pairs of wires (310), (320) extending between the transceivers. The system comprises: the upstream transceiver (100) which includes first (110) and second (120) transmitter portions; the downstream transceiver (200) which includes first (210) and second (220) receiver portions for receiving signals transmitted by the upstream transceiver in a differential mode; and the two pairs of wires (310), (320) extending between the transceivers, the wires forming a composite channel through which signals transmitted by the upstream transceiver travel before being received by the downstream transceiver, the composite channel including direct differential mode channels h11 and h22 between the first and second transmitter portions on the one hand and the first and second receiver portions respectively on the other hand, and indirect channels h21 and h12 between the first and second transmitter portions on the one hand and the second and first receiver portions respectively on the other hand. The upstream transceiver is operable to transmit, to the downstream transceiver, using a discrete multi-tone protocol capable of using up to a number of different tones, a data signal in which related signals are transmitted onto both pairs of wires in a differential mode, such that, in use, each of the first and second receiver portions receives a respective one of the transmitted signals after modification by the composite channel together with some portion of the other related signal. Each receiver portion includes a fast Fourier Transform module for converting the received signal into the frequency domain and a related-signals processing frequency domain equaliser for further processing the resulting signal using frequency domain equalisation coefficients calculated in dependence upon estimated channel transfer functions associated with the direct differential mode channel terminating at the respective receiver portion and additionally in dependence upon estimated channel transfer functions associated with the indirect channel terminating at the respective receiver portion.
