Abstract: Method and apparatus for data access for a mobile terminal comprising a module for determining whether first and second modes of wireless network coverage is available, a module for selecting the first mode if available, a module for attempting access via the second mode on failure to establish access via the first mode and a module for monitoring availability of the first mode. Even when a connection is established via the second mode, availability of the first mode is monitored and access attempted, when second mode connection is idle.

Abstract: Generally, the present invention provides a method for detecting poor RF conditions, and entering different sleep mode levels or phases in accordance with the RF conditions to save battery power. Mobile device battery life can be conserved when the mobile device detects poor RF conditions and enters a deep sleep mode of operation. In this deep sleep mode of operation the mobile device periodically samples the RF conditions and gradually increases the period between samples when the RF conditions do not improve. Because mobility can change the RF condition for wireless devices even in areas of good RF coverage, the mobile device operating in the deep sleep mode can detect this mobility and thus enhance the probability of entering an idle state, or alternatively, entering a longer power save mode. When the RF condition improves, the mobile device exits from the deep sleep mode and returns to the idle state.

Abstract: Wireless devices and methods are provided for performing mobile discovery of an active data subscription. This involves a wireless device attempting to register using an APN that is one of a CDMA-centric APN and a GSM-centric APN. If that attempt fails, then the wireless device attempts to register using an APN that is the other of the CDMA-centric APN and the GSM-centric APN. In some cases the first APN attempted is always the CDMA-centric APN; in some cases the first APN attempted is a previously successfully used APN. For wireless devices with a data roaming enable/disable mechanism, the method can be executed while data roaming is disabled such that when data roaming is enabled, the proper APN to use will have been previously identified.

Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for wireless network selection by multi-mode devices. A mobile device maintains an indication of any wireless network services currently provided to the mobile device. According to an embodiment of the application, the mobile device automatically scans for both GSM wireless networks and CDMA wireless networks in order to acquire a wireless network that can provide a service that is not currently provided to the mobile device. Therefore, the mobile device avoids partial service or limited service when better service is available.

Abstract: In one embodiment, a scheme is disclosed for managing network traffic load upon outage of a network node disposed in a wireless packet data network, wherein the network node is adapted to serve a substantially large number of mobile nodes using respective data connections. Upon encountering an outage-causing condition, the network node releases the data connections and determines to suppress generation of session termination messages that would have otherwise been generated for transmission to the mobile nodes.
