Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. A user equipment (UE) may transmit to a base station a request for resources including an indication of a transmission beam for performing a sidelink communication in a millimeter wave (mmW) system. The base station may determine a transmission configuration based on the request for resources. The UE may transmit reference signals based on the transmission configuration, and the base station may monitor for the reference signals using one or more reception beams. The base station may determine timing information for the sidelink communication, and transmit the timing information to the UE in a resource grant. Based on the timing information, the UE may perform the sidelink communication using the transmission beam. In some examples, the sidelink communication may be multiplexed in frequency from the perspective of the base station with an uplink transmission from another UE.

Abstract: Certain aspects of the present disclosure relate to assisting communications with low data payloads with relay nodes. An example method generally includes forming a first cluster with a first wireless node and one or more second wireless nodes, wherein each of the second wireless nodes has a low data rate demand relative to a system bandwidth. The method also includes determining to serve as a relay node for the first cluster, generating a first set of packets for uplink transmission to a base station, receiving a second set of packets from the one or more second wireless nodes, combining the first set of packets and the second set of packets into an uplink payload based on the determination, and transmitting, to the base station, the uplink payload based on the determination.

Abstract: In order to address the potential for antenna failure in large antenna arrays, a method, a computer-readable medium, and an apparatus are provided for wireless communication, e.g., at a base station or CPE. The apparatus detects a failure of a plurality of antenna elements in an antenna array associated with an antenna module in an antenna array comprising a plurality of antenna modules. The apparatus then applies a mitigation procedure in response to detecting the failure, e.g., when a fraction of antenna elements for which a failure is detected meets a threshold. The mitigation procedure may include any of switching to a different codebook, increasing DL or UL transmission power, or a VGA. The failure may be detected by transmitting pilot signals using sets of antenna elements of the antenna array and using signal strength measurements to detect antenna element failures.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. A wireless device may configure one or more first sets of resources of a radio frequency spectrum band associated with a first pathloss mode, and may configure one or more second sets of resources associated with a second pathloss mode. Each set of resources may be configured with some transmission timing parameters and frame structure, such that a transmission time interval (TTI) associated with the first pathloss mode may be different from the TTI associated with the second pathloss mode. The wireless device may communicate with a second wireless device using the one or more first sets of resources based on identifying a pathloss value is below an identified pathloss threshold. Additionally, the wireless device may communicate with a third device using the one or more second sets of resources based on identifying a pathloss value satisfies the identified pathloss threshold.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. A communication device may perform a first set of beam measurements for a first plurality of beams over a wireless channel, each beam in the first plurality of beams having a first beam-width. The communication device may transmit a first beam measurement report for the first plurality of beams, the first beam measurement report indicating a beam sweep order for a second set of beam measurements for a second plurality of beams. The communication device may perform the second set of beam measurements for the second plurality of beams over the wireless channel according to the indicated beam sweep order, each beam in the second plurality of beams having a second beam-width that is narrower than the first beam-width.

Abstract: Wireless communications systems and methods related to mitigation of calibration errors are provided. A base station (BS) transmits, via an antenna array including a plurality of antenna elements, a first communication signal using a first number of the plurality of antenna elements and a first transmission power level to a user equipment (UE). The BS receives from at least one UE, a measurement report based on the first communication signal. The BS transmitting a second communication signal using a second number of the plurality of antenna elements and a second transmission power level based on the one or more measurement reports. At least one of the first number of the plurality of antenna elements is different from the second number of the plurality of antenna elements, or the first transmission power level is different from the second transmission power level. Other aspects and features are also claimed and described.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for beamforming in environments with angular constraints are described. A wireless device such as a user equipment (UE) or base station may configure beam parameters based on a sensitivity level of a neighboring wireless device (e.g., a satellite). The configuration of beam parameters may be based on an interference power profile (e.g., threshold(s) indicated by an interference power profile). The interference power profile may specify a mask, which may indicate allowed or unintended directions for transmission or a transmission power mask. A beamformed transmission may be in accordance with the configured beam parameters, which may result in a reduced transmission power in one or more directions, compliance with total power limits, peak power limits, or energy radiated over a period of time, or any combination thereof.
