Abstract: Apparatus for use to facilitate threading and unthreading substantially vertical lengths of pipe on a drilling rig by moving the pipe between the well bore center line and a racking assembly. An arm having a gripping head mounted thereon is extendable and retractable relative to a carriage mounted on the drilling rig working board. When storing pipe, the lower end of each pipe is set on a support assembly which includes a plurality of switches which signal the position of each pipe thereon. The arm and carriage are moved under control of a computer to an appropriate slot for storing the upper end of the pipe stand. When running pipe into the well bore, the arm and carriage move the upper end of the pipe to the center line of the well and when the traveling block of the drilling rig picks up the pipe, a signal generated by the switch beneath the pipe causes the carriage and arm to move to the location for unracking the next stand of pipe.

Abstract: A drilling apparatus of the type having a drilling mast and a transfer arm mounted at a first axis adjacent the mast to move between a lower position near ground level and an upper position aligned with the mast is provided with a reaction point anchor fixed with respect to the drilling mast and spaced from the first axis. Abstract: A guide means is removably affixed to the derrick of a workover rig or the like for capturing and stabilizing a medial part of a pipe section as a pipe string is being made up and run into a wellbore. The guide apparatus is pivotally mounted to the derrick so that it can be extended into operative relationship respective to the pipe section, and is retracted clear of the string by remote control. The apparatus includes a yoke which is pivoted from a substantially vertical into a substantially horizontal position. The yoke is adjusted so that the apex thereof coincides with the central axis of the pipe, and as the yoke is moved from the retracted to the operation position, the pipe section is forced to move into the yoke apex, thereby properly aligning the pipe section with the pipe string and with the borehole. Adjustment means enables precise orientation of the yoke respective to the axial centerline of the pipe string.

Abstract: There is disclosed an apparatus for providing passive motion compensation at the ship-riser interface of a rise-moored floating production system or oil storage tanker, with its associated equipment including a riser handling system. Normal production proceeds, while ship motions are isolated from the riser, preventing excessive load transfer or unacceptable dyanmic effects. The main feature of the system is its ship-borne installation, with all moving parts clear of the waterline. The system is totally self-contained, with motion compensation, riser pipe and handling equipment on board. By installing the flotation within the hull of the ship, it moves with the ship, thus avoiding significant inertial and weather-related loads. The design is flexible. The range of seas can be extended by adjusting the basic parameters: float shape and size, tank depth, liquid S.G., counterweight size, link geometry, bridge length, etc.

Abstract: An improved boom for a drill rig is described which includes two rotatably mounted clamps which are rotatable between a side loading position, to facilitate loading and unloading in the horizontal position, and a central position, in which a clamped tubular is aligned with the drilling axis when the boom is in the vertical position. An automatic hydraulic sequencing circuit is provided to automatically rotate the clamps into the side loading position whenever the boom is pivoted with a down-hole tubular positioned in the clamp. In this position, the clamped tubular is aligned with a safety plate mounted on the boom to prevent a clamped tubular from slipping from the clamps. A safety frame is formed between the tower of the drill rig and the vertical boom by a slidable bolt mounted on the tower and an annular receiving member mounted on the boom to receive the end of the bolt. This boom also includes an improved pivoting linkage which facilitates the transport of the rig.

Abstract: A self-centering clamp for drilling tubulars includes first and second transverse guide rods. Two opposed clamping jaws are guided along the first guide rod. These jaws are positioned by two opposed rocker arms, each of which is mounted to a cross brace which slides along the second guide rod. The rocker arms are symmetrically positioned by a link mechanism which also slides along the second guide rod and by a hydraulic cylinder coupled between the two rocker arms. The entire clamp is supported in a frame onto which is mounted the two guide rods. The frame is pivotably mounted to a pipe boom so as to rotate about an axis parallel to the clamped pipe and transverse to the first and second guide rods. Abstract: This invention relates to a method of bundling bars together which reduces the sound levels generated hitherto in conventional bundling pockets. In particular, bars are successively and separately transported laterally from a support table to run down an arm which is reciprocably movable by a motor driven mechanism. Movement of the arm upwards forces a pawl away from the position shown affording access to the bar into the bottom of the pocket, the bar being carried upwardly by the arm against the downward pressure of any bundled bars already in situ. The pawl returns to its position of rest before the arm is retracted and the cycle is repeated.

Abstract: A hanging tool tray for supporting tools, parts and the like. The hanging tool tray is comprised of a flat tray-like base having shallow sides and is of generally rectangular configuration. Supporting cables are connected to the four corners and extend above the tray to provide a loop which is hooked in an eye of an elongated hook having an open C-shaped hook at the top.
