Abstract: A Tee nut and method of manufacture is provided which Tee nut includes a flange and a hollow barrel extending from the flange. The flange is general circular and has a pair of pawls extending upwardly therefrom, each of which terminates in teeth for engaging a base member. The barrel has an end portion proximal to the flange and a distal end portion. The proximal end portion has internal female threads and the distal end portion has a smooth unthreaded inner surface. The wall thickness of the distal end portion is thinner than the wall thickness of the proximal end portion, and the outer wall diameter is essentially constant for the length of the barrel. The barrel is formed first as an elongate member extending from a strip of material initially having a constant inner diameter and an outer diameter of the proximal portion greater than the outer diameter of the distal portion, with the distal portion having a wall thickness thinner than the wall thickness of the proximal portion. The outer diameter of the distal portion is increased to the same diameter as the outer diameter of the proximal portion while maintaining the same wall thicknesses of both the distal and proximal portions. The internal surface of the proximal portion is threaded with threads terminating at the distal portion and having a lead angle of at least about 80.degree.. The terminal end surface of the distal portion is essentially planar and parallel to a flange.

Abstract: A method for making a lock nut engagable and retainable about a threaded shaft wherein a body member having a bore is threaded for receiving a threaded shaft, and at least a portion of the bore is deformed to provide threaded shaft engaging means engagable with a threaded shaft disposed in the bore. The deformed portion of the bore is then sized with a threaded sizing tool that is oversized relative to the deformed portion of the bore and undersized relative to any undeformed portion of the bore to provide a sized lock nut with a relatively consistent torque performance and a reduced statistical spread over several installation and removal cycles of the nut about the threaded shaft.

Abstract: An apparatus makes self-piercing nuts from blanks (11) each having a cylindrical pilot portion (13) which has a raw unopened and unthreaded bore (12) and an end surface serving as a punch. The pilot portion surrounded by a rim (14) extending along a periphery a nut body, and an annular groove (15) is present between the pilot (13) and the rim. The apparatus has a punching die which has a boring punch (33) and a first cylindrical insert (35) fitted on the punch serving to open the bore (12). The boring punch has at its basal portion a tapered annular wall (34), and the cylindrical insert (35) having at its end surface an annular lug (36) capable of fitting in the annular groove. The tapered wall (34) radially expands an end of the pilot portion, so that its peripheral wall is forcibly slanted in a radial direction and an annular edge (13a) of the peripheral wall is stopped by an inner periphery of the annular lug (36). Due to this feature, the apparatus can mass-produce the self-piercing nut of an accurate dimension which can smoothly punch an opening trough a metal plate, and an invariable and sufficient clinching force is ensured to the self-piercing nut.

Abstract: A method of making a self-attaching nut or pierce nut, such as a round nut having cylindrical pilot, an annular groove surrounding the pilot and a panel supporting flange portion surrounding the groove, wherein the groove bottom wall includes a plurality of circumferentially spaced anti-rotation protuberances separated by radial channels and wherein the flange portion is preferably tapered toward the pilot portion to provide a re-entrant groove which provides a secure installation to a panel. The method includes first forming a nut blank having the general configuration of the nut with a continuous annular protuberance and an annular flange portion which extends perpendicular to the groove bottom wall. A forming punch having a cylindrical axial bore and a plurality of generally rectangular or trapezoidal circumferentially spaced projections on the punch forming end is then driven into the groove to telescopically receive the pilot portion and driven against the continuous annular protuberance to form a plurality of circumferentially spaced protuberances which extend from the pilot portion to a midportion of the groove bottom wall. In the most preferred embodiment, the projections on the punch are spaced from the bore, such that semi-circular bridging portions are formed integral with the pilot portion and adjacent protuberances.

Abstract: In order to manufacturer a tee nut by plastic working steps, a swollen portion is formed on a metal plate, a through hole is formed in the forward end surface of this swollen portion, and then the outer diameter and therewith the wall thickness of a forward end portion of the swollen portion is relatively reduced as compared to a base portion of the swollen portion. Then, the outer and inner diameters of the base portion are reduced while substantially maintaining its wall thickness. Thus, the forward end portion defines a relatively thin portion to be caulked, and the base portion defines a relatively thick female screw forming portion of the tee nut. Thus, it is possible to form a tee nut having a shaft with a uniform outer diameter and having a relatively thin forward end portion forming the portion to be caulked while the tee nut is held by the metal plate.

Abstract: An attaching sleeve for a floating nut assembly is formed from rod or wire stock by successive cold heading or cold forming operations. The steps involve cutting off a longitudinal segment from the stock, forming a flange on the front end of the segment, forming a centrally disposed opening through the segment, and forming longitudinally extending ridges projecting outwardly around the periphery of the segment. Abstract: An improved fastener assembly may be used to mount a vehicle wheel on a hub. The fastener assembly includes a nut which is rotatable relative to a washer to enable the fastener assembly to be tightened without marring the wheel. The washer has an annular collar which is loosely connected with the nut by a retainer section which extends from one axial end portion of the nut. The nut and washer collar have abutting annular load transmitting surface areas. The washer also has an annular load transmitting and indicating section which extends radially outwardly from the collar. The load transmitting and indicating section includes a bearing section and a spring section. The spring section flares radially and axially outwardly from the bearing section. When the fastener assembly is tightened with a predetermined preload, the spring section is flattened to provide a visual indication that the desired preload has been applied. Flattening the spring section maximizes the surface area for transmitting the preload to the wheel. The resiliently deflectable spring section may be provided with undulations which are also flattened by the desired preload. In order to minimize the axial extent of the fastener assembly, an inner end surface of the nut is disposed radially inwardly of the top and bottom surfaces of the bearing and spring sections when the fastener assembly is tightened.
