Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communication are described that support beam failure identification and recovery is systems that may use beamforming for uplink and downlink transmission beams. A first beam and a second beam may be configured, and the second beam may be used to identify a failure of the first beam. Upon detection of a beam failure, a beam recovery procedure may be initiated in which an indication of a beam failure may be transmitted using scheduling request (SR) or uplink control channel resource. A base station in some examples may transmit an indication that one of a set of beams may have failed, and a UE may provide an indication of which beam of the set of beams failed, such as based on a received reference signal associated with one of the beams.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communication are described. In some wireless communications systems, a user equipment (UE) may be configured to transition to communicating on a first bandwidth part from communicating on a second bandwidth part. In order to ensure that the UE is able to perform receiver processing for demodulating data received on the first bandwidth part, after transitioning to communicating on the first bandwidth part, the UE may be configured to perform receiver processing using reference signals received on the second bandwidth part. That is, for a configured period of time, before the UE is able to perform receiver processing for demodulating data received on the first bandwidth part using reference signals received on the first bandwidth part, the UE may perform receiver processing for demodulating data received on the first bandwidth part using reference signals received on the second bandwidth part.

The UE may establish a connection with a base station using a first transmission beam, receive configuration information configuring the UE to select between a first decoding hypothesis corresponding to downlink control information (DCI) including a bit field including a beam switch command and a second decoding hypothesis corresponding to the DCI not including the bit field, receive a downlink control channel transmission via the first transmission beam, decode the downlink control channel transmission in accordance with the configuration information to obtain decoded DCI, and communicate with the base station based at least in part on the decoded DCI.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described techniques provide for the identification of a sequence of beamforming parameters that are used for communications between a user equipment (UE) and a base station using a sequence of transmission beams. A UE may measure received reference signals that are transmitted in a series of downlink transmission beams from a base station, and report measurement parameters associated with the downlink transmission beams to the base station as part of a beam tracking and beam refinement procedure. The base station may provide transmission configuration indicator (TCI) states that are associated with each transmission beam. The TCI states may be recorded over a course of a periodic movement of the UE, and may be used deterministically to identify beamforming parameters for transmission and reception of a subsequent series of downlink transmission beams when the UE makes a subsequent same periodic movement.

Abstract: Apparatuses and methods of beam switching are presented. A beam switch message (BSM) is transmitted to a second device via a first beam set. The BSM includes a command to switch from communication via the first beam set to communication via a second beam set at a switch time. It is determined whether a response message is received from the second device via the first beam set, the response message indicating that the second device received the BSM. A communication is sent to the second device via the second beam set after the switch time when the response message is unreceived.

A base station may transmit, to a user equipment (UE) operating in a discontinuous reception mode, a wakeup signal indicating whether data is available to be transmitted to the UE, the wakeup signal transmitted using a first set of transmit beams, which may be selected from a periodic beam management procedure, in accordance with a beam sweeping configuration. The base station may receive, from the UE and based at least in part on the wakeup signal, a response signal. The base station may perform, based at least in part on the response signal, further beam update procedures to identify a second set of transmit beams for future transmissions of the wakeup signal and/or for transmission of physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) to the UE.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communication are described. A base station may identify that data is available to be transmitted to a user equipment (UE) that is operating in a discontinuous reception (DRX) mode. The base station may configure a plurality of UE-specific reference signals for transmission to the UE, each UE-specific reference signal indicating a UE identifier and an availability of data for the UE. The UE may receive the UE-specific reference signal, and identify that data is available for the UE from the base station. The UE may then transmit a beam recovery signal to the base station that includes an identifier for the transmit beam used by the UE to transmit the beam recovery signal. The base station may transmit, using a beam sweeping configuration, the plurality of UE-specific reference signals.
