    Abstract: An electronic device may be provided with a phased antenna array for conveying millimeter wave signals. The array may be mounted to a substrate that includes transmission line layers having a first dielectric permittivity and antenna layers having a second dielectric permittivity that is less than the first dielectric permittivity. A ground plane may be interposed between the antenna layers and the transmission line layers. The array may be mounted to the antenna layers and transceiver circuitry may be mounted to the transmission line layers. Transmission line traces may be formed on the transmission line layers. The relatively high permittivity of the first set of dielectric layers may allow the transmission line traces to be routed relatively close together with minimal electromagnetic interference. The relatively low permittivity of the second set of dielectric layers may allow the array to operate with satisfactory antenna efficiency, gain, and bandwidth.

    Abstract: An electronic device may be provided with wireless circuitry. The wireless circuitry may include multiple antennas and transceiver circuitry. An antenna may have an antenna resonating element formed from portions of a peripheral conductive electronic device housing structure and may have an antenna ground that is separated from the antenna resonating element by a gap. The antenna ground for the antenna may include a first conductive structure that is separated from the antenna resonating element by a first distance and a second conductive structure that is electrically connected to the first conductive structure and separated from the antenna resonating element by a second distance that is less than the first distance. A distributed impedance matching capacitor for the antenna may be formed from the second conductive structure and the antenna resonating element arm. The second conductive structure may be a conductive frame for an electronic component such as a sensor.

    Abstract: An electronic device housing may have a rear housing wall that forms a metal ground plane. A slot may be formed in the metal ground plane. The slot may have one or more open ends along an edge of the ground plane. A near-field communications loop antenna may overlap the slot. The near-field communications loop antenna may have one or more turns. A current path through the metal ground plane may form one of the turns in the near-field communications loop antenna. The slot may form portions of non-near-field-communications antennas in addition to the near-field communications loop antenna. The slot in the non-near-field-communications antennas may be fed using an indirect antenna feed structure. Components such as a capacitor and inductor may help allow non-near-field communications antenna and the near-field communications antenna to be formed from common portions of the metal ground plane.

    Abstract: An electronic device may include a metal housing and a distributed loop antenna. The antenna may include a dielectric carrier. The antenna may include a distributed loop antenna resonating element that extends around the carrier and a loop antenna feed element on the carrier. Portions of the feed element and loop antenna resonating element may be formed from the housing. The feed element may be directly fed and may indirectly feed the distributed loop antenna resonating element via near field electromagnetic coupling. The loop antenna resonating element may include a conductive sheet on the carrier. The conductive sheet and the housing may form a conductive loop path of the loop antenna resonating element. A capacitance may be interposed in the conductive loop path and may be formed by a gap between the conductive sheet and the housing. A speaker driver may be placed within a cavity in the carrier.

    Abstract: An electronic device may be provided with wireless circuitry. The wireless circuitry may include antenna structures such as an antenna resonating element arm and an antenna ground. A split return path may be coupled between the antenna resonating element arm and the antenna ground. The antenna structures may form one or more inverted-F antennas when operated at non-near-field communications frequencies. The antenna structures may be coupled to near-field communications transceiver circuitry using a conductive path. When operated at near-field communications frequencies, near-field communications signals may be conveyed using the conductive path, the antenna resonating element arm, the return path, and the antenna ground. A capacitor may be coupled between the conductive path and an antenna ground. The capacitor may short non-near-field communications signals to the antenna ground and block near-field communications signals from passing from the conductive path to the antenna ground.

    Abstract: An electronic device may be provided with wireless communications circuitry and control circuitry. The wireless communications circuitry may include centimeter wave and millimeter wave transceiver circuitry and a phased antenna array. The phased antenna array may transmit and receive wireless signals having a frequency higher than 10 GHz. Beam steering circuitry may be coupled to the phased antenna array and may be adjusted to steer the wireless signals to communicate with external equipment. Sensor circuitry in the electronic device may gather sensor data. The control circuitry may use the gathered sensor data to determine a polarization mismatch between the electronic device and the external equipment (e.g., between a signal transmitting device and a signal receiving equipment or vice versa). To mitigate the polarization mismatch data loss, the control circuitry may adjust the polarization settings associated with antennas of the electronic device.

    Abstract: An electronic device may be provided with wireless circuitry that includes antenna structures used to determine the position and orientation of the electronic device relative to external wireless equipment. The electronic device may include a housing having a planar conductive layer, a first slot antenna that includes a first bent slot element in the planar conductive layer, and a second slot antenna that includes a second bent slot element in the planar conductive layer. The first and second bent slot elements may be configured to receive radio-frequency signals at the same frequency. The first and second bent slot elements may have the same shape. The electronic device may include control circuitry configured to measure a phase difference between the radio-frequency signals received by the first and second slot antennas. The control circuitry may identify an angle of arrival of the received radio-frequency signals based on the measured phase difference.
