Abstract:
There is described a method and apparatus for controlling the combustion by-product formation rate in at least one burner of a fossil fuel fired power plant. The burner has an associated flame scanner which is focused on a small area of the burner flame to obtain an image signal of the flame. A flame signal that represents properties of temporal combustion in the visible light spectrum of the burner is generated from the image signal. Combustion turbulence at the burner is analyzed from the flame signal by a dynamic invariant that has a relationship to the combustion by-product values and different combustion by-product levels at the burner and the combustion turbulence is correlated to the combustion by-product formation rate at the burner. The method and apparatus can also be used to correlated the combustion turbulence at a multiplicity of burners to the associated combustion by-product formation rate.
Abstract:
Beta gauge composition correction is performed using signals from a plurality of detectors that are positioned so that the ratio of radiation received by the detectors depends on the composition of material through which the radiation passes before reaching the detectors. Radiation is measured at the detectors and the differences between radiation received by the detectors is used to compensate the beta gauge to correct for composition variations. An array of detectors is divided into inner detectors generally aligned with the central portion of a beta radiation beam and at least one set of outer detectors surrounding, at least in part, the inner detectors. Measurements are made including all the detectors, the inner detectors and the at least one set of outer detectors with the difference between the measurements made by the inner detectors and the outer detectors being used to compensate the total measurement made by all the detectors.
Abstract:
A method and system for visually displaying real-time enterprise management information is provided. An application integration platform receives plural types of data from manufacturing and information systems within an enterprise and analyzes the plural types of data to determine key performance indicators, such as a number of tardy jobs. A process control server receives manufacturing data from at least one work center and forwards the manufacturing data to the application integration platform. A user interface that interfaces with the application integration platform provides a visual display of the number of tardy jobs in accordance with the class of user interacting therewith. The user may then reschedule the tardy jobs on alternate machines and determine how such rescheduling will affect the expected completion times of all jobs running on all machines.
Abstract:
A control system for a centrifuge that allows the centrifuge to continue to run when there is a short duration failure or outage of the AC power source. The control system allows the centrifuge to be brought to a stop in a normal shutdown mode where there are longer duration failures or outages of the AC power source. This allows power to be maintained to the pump that lubricates the centrifuge bearings so that the bearings are lubricated during the coast down of the centrifuge and the differential speed of the centrifuge to be controlled during coast down allowing the centrifuge bowl to be cleared of solids so that the centrifuge can be immediately started up at lower vibration levels once power is restored.
Abstract:
A single vane shutter flag is asynchronously controlled so that a measuring system light source is interrupted for a minimum necessary amount of time for standardization/calibration and normalization of InGaAs system detectors. Source/detector hemispheres or serially connected randomly oriented fiber bundles homogenize light passing to the detectors. Light source testing is performed by measuring spectral power distributions at a plurality of light source power levels and comparing the measurements to baseline characteristics established for the light source. Calibration sample life is extended indefinitely by controlling the shutter flag to block source light except for short calibration time periods during which standard light levels are provided.
Abstract:
A system for use in ac to ac or dc to ac power conversion equipment to detect faults in an inverter when the inverter is in a high impedance mode. The system detects ground faults or cross wiring conditions by converting the inverter outputs to digital signals and evaluating the frequencies of the resulting signals. The system keeps the inverter in the high impedance mode until after it has been determined that neither of the described abnormal statuses exist. The system tests for both of the abnormal statuses on power up and thereafter tests only for a ground fault whenever the inverter switches are disabled.
Abstract:
A method of assembling a part to a workpiece with a combination tool supported on a robot, where a mounting surface of the part is assembled on a target surface of the workpiece including the following steps. (a) Indexing to the assembly position. (b) Picking a part with the part gripper on the part delivery arm from a part supply station. (c) Indexing part delivery and workpiece preparation arms to the preparation position. (d) Simultaneously: engaging the part mounting surface with the part surface preparation module; and engaging the workpiece target surface preparation module with the target surface. (e) Indexing to the assembly position. (f) Using the previously set tool operating axis and calculated tool offsets, engaging the prepared part mounting surface with the prepared workpiece target surface. (g) Releasing the part gripper and withdrawing the tool from the part/workpiece assembly.
Abstract:
A systematic approach is presented for the development and implementation of cost-effective transmission asset maintenance strategies. The overall concept and methodology are based on transmission reliability and risk management and address the value of preventive maintenance activities. This may help electric network utilities conduct maintenance policy assessment, region-wide criticality analysis, and optimal maintenance resource allocation and task scheduling.
Abstract:
A presently-preferred process for bending a workpiece comprises placing a first portion of the workpiece on a substantially flat surface so that a second portion of the workpiece overhangs an edge of the substantially flat surface, and securing the first portion of the workpiece on the substantially flat surface by clamping the workpiece between the substantially flat surface and a substantially v-shaped end portion of a male die. The presently-preferred process also comprises causing the second portion of the workpiece to pivot around a tip of the substantially v-shaped end portion by rotating a bending die around the tip while the bending die contacts the second portion of the workpiece.
Abstract:
A flow sensor for an analytical instrument. The flow sensor can be used to detect the flow of a fluid such as purge gas in the instrument. The sensor can measure the fluid flow at an opening of the instrument enclosure. The sensor has first and second differential pressure switches connected in series. The sensor has a sealed chamber which is in the opening. Bordering the sealed chamber are first and second restrictors through which the fluid can flow. A sensing tube transfers the pressure in the sealed chamber to the first and second switches.
