Heat management devices and structures are disclosed that can be used in lamps having solid state light sources such as one or more LEDs. Some lamp embodiments comprise one or more phase change radiators that utilize the latent heat of fluids to circulate and draw heat away from the LEDs and radiate the heat into the ambient, allowing for the LEDs to operate at a lower temperature. Some phase change radiators according to the present invention can comprise a main radiator body and multiple radiator coolant loops mounted to the body. The present invention relies on the circulation of heated fluid through the radiator body to radiate heat from the LEDs. The heated liquid moves away from the LEDs and is circulated back to thermal contact with the LEDs thought the coolant loops.

An LED lamp for outdoor and large space lighting, particularly for streets, warehouses car parks and the like, is adapted for fitting into legacy light fittings designed for sodium bulbs and the like. The LED lamp comprises a plurality of light emitting diodes arranged over a surface of the lamp, is rotatably connected through a rotatable electrical connection to a screw-in adaptor for insertion into a legacy screw-in socket, such that the screw in adaptor is rotatable independently of the lamp, so that the legacy screw in socket can be used even though the light fitting is too small to allow rotation of the LED lamp. Additional embodiments provide for cooling airflow through the light fitting, for temperature control of the LEDs, and for failure protection, to ensure a longest possible lamp lifetime.

A surgical headlamp containing lamp housings, each containing multiple LED light sources is featured wherein the LEDs cooperate together to produce a light engine. The lamp housings may be adjusted so that light beams emitted by each LED be selectively converged through a focusing lens at a spot a predetermined distance in front of the lamp housings. Each lamp housing typically contains in addition to the LEDs, one or more focusing lenses to gather and direct the light generated by the LEDs forward to an illuminated work area. Batteries, preferably rechargeable, are mounted in a waist pack external to the headband, and are used to poser the LEDs. A cooling system for cooling the heat generated by the LED's is provided which utilizes a swirling effect of fluid adjacent a heat sink to transfer the heat to the swirling fluid.

This device preferably consists of tubular contact members having a partcylindrical concave surface for contacting the fluorescent tubes and inserted in a circuit for circulating cooling water through the tubular contact members. The disclosure is directed to a growth chamber apparatus and method of operating the same. The method is concerned with operating a growth chamber of the type having a plurality of electric lamps and at least one cooling coil through which a cooling fluid is circulated to maintain a desired temperature or humidity level within the chamber. The disclosed method comprises the steps of providing an absorption type refrigeration unit and utilizing at least a portion of the cooled process fluid output to supply the cooling fluid for the coil; and, conducting the heat generated by the lamps to the absorption type refrigeration unit to supply at least a portion of the energy required to operate the unit. The disclosed apparatus is particularly arranged for carrying out the noted method.
