Abstract: A support assembly for a bearing of a gas turbine engine includes a shaft extending along an axial direction. The support assembly includes an outer race positioned radially exterior to the bearing such that the outer race supports the bearing. Additionally, the support assembly includes a shape memory alloy damper positioned radially exterior to the outer race and at least partially supporting the outer race. Moreover, the shape memory alloy damper includes a plurality of sleeves. One or more sleeves of the plurality of sleeves include a shape memory alloy material.

Abstract: A support system for a gas turbine engine is provided. The support system includes a load-bearing unit that includes a first flange, a support element supporting the load-bearing unit and having a second flange, a fastener connecting the first flange and the second flange, a first super-elastic shape memory alloy component in contact with the first flange, and a second super-elastic shape memory alloy component in contact with the second flange. The first and the second super-elastic shape memory alloy components are configured to deform when a load exerted by the fastener exceeds a threshold load value of the fastener.

Abstract: A support assembly for a bearing of a gas turbine engine including a spring finger ring positioned radially exterior to an outer race of the bearing. The spring finger ring includes an outer ring positioned radially exterior to the outer ring, an inner ring positioned radially interior to the outer ring, and a plurality of spring fingers extending between the inner and outer rings. One or more spring fingers configured as two-sided spring fingers including a first ligament coupled to the outer ring and extending at a first circumferential angle to a first radial bumper proximate to the inner ring and a second ligament coupled to the inner ring and extending at a different second circumferential angle to a second radial bumper proximate to the outer ring. The first and second radial bumpers define first and second radial gaps between the bumpers and the inner and outer rings, respectively.

The composite fan casing includes a core having a plurality of core layers of reinforcing fibers bonded together with a thermosetting polymeric resin and having an outer surface. The composite fan casing further includes at least one stiffener integrally coupled to an aft portion of the outer surface of the core relative to the central axis. Additionally, the at least one stiffener comprises an elastic material.

Abstract: An aircraft spinner assembly includes collar stud joints connecting spinner to forward flange connected to fan rotor disk. Collar stud joint is operable to push out spinner when stud is un-torqued. Collar may be attached to stud disposed through spinner bolt hole in spinner and collar disposed in counterbore of spinner bolt hole. An aft stud thread on collar stud may be threaded into aft nut which may be swaged into flange bolt hole in forward flange. A washer may be in counterbore between collar and spinner and made from low friction and/or sacrificial material. A forward radial clearance may surround stud between stud and spinner. A forward nut may be threaded onto forward stud threads on forward end of the collar stud and abut spinner. External aft stud threads may be on collar studs and threaded into internal flange threads within flange bolt holes in forward flange.

Abstract: Aspirating face seal between high and low pressure regions of turbomachine between rotatable and non-rotatable members of turbomachine includes gas bearing rotatable and non-rotatable face surfaces, non-rotatable face surface mounted on annular slider on non-rotatable member. Retracting means retracts annular slider away from rotatable member and non-rotatable face surface away from rotatable surface and includes circumferentially spaced apart non-coiled springs axially disposed between slider and non-rotatable engine member. Leaf springs may include first and second ends mounted or attached to first and second mounting lugs or tabs attached to non-rotatable member and slider respectively and middle portion between ends. Springs oriented for retracting slider if slider contacts rotatable member. Primary and starter seal teeth may be mounted on carrier on rotatable member. Primary seal tooth may be on non-rotatable member and starter seal tooth on rotatable member.

Abstract: A housing for retention of the outer race of a bearing of a gas turbine engine includes an arrangement of spring fingers that yields a lightweight housing capable of withstanding very high radial loads combined with very high torsional windup and axial thrust load. Controlled circumferential gaps on both sides of each spring finger limit the deflection and self-arrest the distortion of the housing. The spring fingers define at least one side edge that extends at an angle relative to the axial direction. An axial gap is created on the aft end by a portion of the spring finger beam structure that opposes an axial face of the housing and limits the axial distortion. A radial gap created between interface hardware of the housing and the inner retention housing also acts to retain the spring finger housing under load in a radial direction.

Abstract: A gas turbine engine includes a compressor section and a turbine section arranged in serial flow order. A shaft is provided rotatable with at least a portion of the compressor section and with at least a portion of the turbine section. A bearing is also provided supporting rotation of the shaft, with a support element in turn supporting the bearing. The gas turbine engine also includes a superelastic member formed of a shape memory alloy supporting at least one of the support element or the bearing. The superelastic member is installed in a pre-stressed condition to enhance a dampening function of the superelastic member.

The hybrid bearing support system includes a shaft extension fixedly coupled to a rotatable member at a radially inner end of the shaft extension, a radially outer end of the shaft extension fixedly coupled to a rotatable race of a bearing supporting the rotatable member, and a recoupler device formed of a shape memory alloy (SMA) material coupled in parallel with at least a portion of the shaft extension between the radially inner end and the radially outer end.
