    摘要: A method of manufacturing a thin-film magnetic head comprises the steps of forming a first pole layer, forming a gap layer on a pole portion of the first pole layer, and forming a second pole layer on the gap layer. The second pole layer incorporates a first layer adjacent to the gap layer, and a second layer including a track width defining portion. The step of forming the second pole layer includes the steps of: forming a magnetic layer for forming the first layer on the gap layer; forming the second layer on the magnetic layer; and etching the magnetic layer to align with a width of the track width defining portion, so that the magnetic layer is formed into the first layer and the width of each of the first layer and the second layer taken in a medium facing surface is made equal to the track width.

    摘要: A method of manufacturing magnetic heads comprises the step of: fabricating a magnetic head substructure by forming components of a plurality of magnetic heads on a single substrate, wherein a plurality of rows of pre-head portions that will be the respective magnetic heads later are aligned in the substructure; and fabricating the magnetic heads by separating the pre-head portions from one another through cutting the substructure. In the substructure first resistor elements and second resistor elements are formed. Each of the first resistor elements has a resistance that varies depending on the location of an end of an MR element located in a medium facing surface along the direction orthogonal to the medium facing surface. Each of the second resistor elements has a resistance that varies depending on the location of an end face of a track width defining portion located in the medium facing surface along the direction orthogonal to the medium facing surface. The medium facing surfaces are formed while monitoring the resistance values of the first and second resistor elements.

The first pole portion projects from a flat surface of a first yoke portion at a medium-facing surface side and having a reduced width at its upper end. The second pole portion faces the upper end of the first pole portion, having the same width as the upper end of the first pole portion, with the gap film interposed between the second pole portion and the upper end of the first pole portion. The first pole portion includes a magnetic film adjacent to the gap film, the magnetic film etched at both sides in width direction to have a narrowed portion having substantially the same width as the second pole portion, and a base portion connected to the narrowed portion, increasing in thickness toward the narrowed portion.

    摘要: The invention is directed to improvement of a thin film magnetic head of a magnetic recording apparatus. The magnetic head includes a write element, in which a first coil and a second coil are provided on a first insulating film formed on one surface of a first magnetic film and surround in a spiral form a back gap portion. One of the first coil and the second coil is fitted into the space between coil turns of the other, insulated from the coil turns of the other by a second insulating film, and the first and second coils are connected to each other so as to generate magnetic flux in the same direction. One of the first coil and the second coil has a side surface being adjacent to the pole portion with the second insulating film and another side surface being adjacent to the back gap portion with the second insulating film, and each of the side surfaces has a taper angle making the sectional shape of the coil narrower in the lower part and wider in the upper part. The upper surfaces of the first and second coils form the same plane.

    摘要: A method of manufacturing a thin-film magnetic head may include forming a first magnetic layer, a thin-film coil, an insulating layer, a gap layer, and a second magnetic layer. The first magnetic layer may be formed to include a first pole portion and a first yoke portion. The second magnetic layer may be formed to include a second pole portion and a second yoke portion. At least part of the thin-film coil may be located on a side of the first pole portion and between the gap layer and the first yoke portion, and may be covered with the gap layer. A surface of the first pole portion that faces toward the gap layer and a surface of the insulating layer that faces toward the gap layer may together form one flat surface. An interface region between the second pole portion and the second yoke portion may be formed to face toward the one flat surface.

This edge includes: a first portion facing toward the first side, the gap layer being disposed in between; two second portions that are disposed on both sides of the first portion opposed to each other in the direction of the track width and that are disposed such that a difference in level is created between the first portion and each of the second portions; a third portion connecting an end of the first portion to one of the second portions; and a fourth portion connecting the other end of the first portion to the other one of the second portions. Each of the above-mentioned difference in level and the distance between the straight line drawn in line with the second side and the second portions is smaller than the distance between the straight line and the first portion.

The coupling section is disposed away from the air bearing surface and magnetically couples the bottom pole layer to the top pole layer. The write gap layer is provided between the pole portions of the bottom pole layer and the top pole layer. The thin-film coil is provided between the bottom pole layer and the top pole layer and insulated from the bottom pole layer and the top pole layer. The bottom pole layer and the cooling layer are disposed in one plane. The cooling layer is located farther from the air bearing surface than the bottom pole layer. The bottom pole layer and the cooling layer are separated with a gap.
