摘要:
An engine ignition system includes spark plugs having two high voltage electrodes connected to separate high voltage sources. Should one voltage source fail, the engine will continue to fire with sparks generated by the other high voltage source. The invention has special applicability to single engine aircraft.

A spark plug with improved wear resistance includes an outer conductive housing, a ceramic insulator positioned within the housing, and a central electrode inside the insulator. One or more ring-shaped auxiliary electrodes are positioned on the ceramic insulator between the central electrode and the outer conductive housing. The one or more ring-shaped auxiliary electrodes have a central portion and peripheral edges which are thickened with respect to the central portion. The spark plug provides a spark gap between the central electrode and the auxiliary electrode and between the auxiliary electrode and the conductive housing.

A spark plug which realizes reliability against thermal stress even in a case where dissimilar noble metal materials are disposed on the tip portion of the center electrode opposing the ground electrode and which realizes improved productivity while assuring durable reliability. The spark plug includes a center electrode electrically insulated from a housing and having a small-diameter portion at a tip portion which has a diameter smaller than that of a main body of the center electrode and composed of similar kinds of material as the center electrode, and a round-shape material, which is formed into a cylindrical or a ring shape, composed of dissimilar metal material. The round-shape material is fitted to the small-diameter portion of the center electrode so as to form a minute clearance between an inner surface of the round-shape material and is fixed to the center electrode by a large diameter portion which is integrally formed on a tip portion of the center electrode such that the minute clearance is kept between the round-shape material and the center electrode.

A spark plug which has a capacitor located therein, connected in parallel to the main or ignition spark gap (13), additional includes a pilot or pre-spark gap (12) located within the insulator (18) of the spark gap, to control discharge of the capacitor (14) through the main spark gap (13). In accordance with the invention, the pre-spark gap (12) is located within a chamber (34) in the insulator which is filled with a pressurized gas, preferably nitrogen under pressure of between 2 to 100 bar, preferably 5 to 30 bar, with the electrodes (27, 27) defining the pre-spark gap being spaced, preferably, between about 0.1 to 1 mm from each other. Placing the pre-spark gap electrodes within a pressurized gas chamber increases the energy available at the main spark gap (13) for ignition even of very lean fuel-air mixtures. Preferably, an inductive-resistive circuit (15) is connected in shunt across the main electrode (13) to prevent arcing and glow discharges across the main spark gap (13) after the initial ignition spark.

A spark plug for an internal combustion engine, the spark plug comprising a casing, a center electrode, a connector pin for the center electrode, and a plunger adapted to be axially displaced within the spark plug by the compression pressure as pressure builds in the cylinder, the plunger first closes a set of contacts in the spark plug causing current to flow in the primary side of an ignition coil, then closes a second set of contacts in the spark plug connecting the center electrode to the secondary side of the ignition coil, and finally opens the first set of contacts causing a large voltage to be induced in the secondary side which voltage is applied to the center electrode.

A spark plug having two spark gaps connected in series, the first gap being formed between the main, positive electrode extending lengthwise through the plug and a first electrode finger attached to a conductor sleeve embracing the lower end of the porcelain insulating stem of the plug. The second spark gap is defined between the conductor sleeve and a second electrode finger attached to the conductive base portion of the plug which is secured in threaded engagement with an engine block.
