A temperature tag and system for sensing and reporting an internal temperature reading inside a container. The temperature tag mounts on an outside surface of the container, and a shaft with a temperature sensor extends through the side of the container and senses the internal temperature reading. A plurality of readings may be recorded at a predefined sampling rate and stored in a data memory. The temperature tag then sends the temperature readings to a reader device that presents the temperature readings to a user. The reader device may trigger the temperature tag to send the temperature readings with a signal such as an infrared (IR) signal, a radio frequency (RF) signal, and the like. The temperature readings may be analyzed in the temperature tag, the reader device, or may be downloaded to a computer to determine if an alarm condition exists.

A system and method for using a hand held device having a display to display information related to a consumer appliance. In one described embodiment the system generally includes the consumer appliance which has a memory in which is stored an electronic document including instructions relevant to the operation of the consumer appliance. The consumer appliance is adapted to communicate with the hand-held device. In this manner, the consumer appliance can transmit signals indicative of the electronic document to the hand-held device and the hand-held device can display in the display a representation of the electronic document. In another described embodiment, the system generally includes the hand-held device and a Web site which stores instructions relevant to the operation of the consumer appliance. The hand-held device is adapted to communicate with the Web site to retrieve the instructions for display in the display.

A wireless, programmable system for medical monitoring includes a base unit and a plurality of individual wireless, remotely programmable biosensor transceivers. The base unit manages the transceivers by issuing registration, configuration, data acquisition, and transmission commands using wireless techniques. Physiologic data from the wireless transceivers is demultiplexed and supplied via a standard interface to a conventional monitor for display. Initialization, configuration, registration, and management routines for the wireless transceivers and the base unit are also described.

A method for generating and processing universal input codes, for which a universal remote control protocol is applied, and an apparatus thereof are provided. The method includes the steps of (a) setting a type code for indicating the type of an input device, and universal input codes which are mapped with local input codes according to the type of the input devices; (b) forming a data format by adding the type code and universal input codes set in step (a) and operation parameters for operating the type code and universal input codes. According to the method and apparatus, by unifying diverse input devices, manufacturing costs and developing time can be reduced, and user convenience can be provided.

Supercapacitor/ultracapacitor technology is applied to hand-held remote-control devices, thereby providing a unit that does not require batteries. In terms of hardware, a device according to the invention includes a hand-held enclosure having a plurality of operator controls supported thereon, a wireless control signal generator, and electronic circuitry interconnecting the operator controls to wireless control signal generator. The circuitry causes the generator to transmit a wireless signal in response to the operator controls so as to affect the operation of the appliance. The device further includes a source of electrical energy to power the circuitry, the source of electrical energy including a supercapacitor or ultracapacitor, and an input to receive externally applied energy to recharge the supercapacitor or ultracapacitor. The input to receive externally applied energy converts mechanical or electrical energy into direct current (DC). Depending upon the embodiment, the energy generator system may be integral to, or separate from, the housing of the unit. A mechanical input includes a miniature generator in electrical communication with the supercapacitor or ultracapacitor for recharging purposes. The input itself may comprise a crank supported on the housing, with a gear train mechanically coupling the crank to the generator, a turnable dial supported on the housing and a spring mechanism coupling the dial to the generator, or a lever arm supported on the housing and a ratchet mechanism coupling the lever arm to the generator.
