A universal joint assembly includes a cross and an end fitting having respective rotational centers that are precisely co-axially aligned with one another to minimize rotational imbalance. The cross has a pair of outwardly extending trunnions, upon which respective bearing cups are rotatably supported. A span control sleeve is press fit about each of the bearing cups. Each of the span control sleeves includes an outwardly extending flange portion that is precisely located relative to the rotational center of the cross. The end fitting is formed having a pair of inwardly facing surfaces that are precisely located relative to the rotational center of the end fitting. When the cross is assembled with the end fitting, the outwardly extending flange portions of the span control sleeves abut the inwardly facing surfaces of the end fitting. As a result, the rotational center of the cross is precisely aligned with the rotational center of the end fitting. An installation fixture is provided for installing the span control sleeves on the bearing cups in the desired positions.

Each bearing bush (9) has an open end 29 and has rolling contact members 27 rotatably supporting the trunnion (17) around the longitudinal axis (7) of the trunnion (17). An annular seal (30) is provided in each bearing bush 9. The annular seal (30) is held in the bearing bush 9 by a press fit. The annular seal (30) includes an annular carrier (31) which projects from the open end (29) of the bearing bush (9). The annular seal includes at least one first sealing lip (35) which is in contact with the first sealing face (18) of the trunnion (17). The annular seal has a pre-seal (38) in the form of a sealing lip or bead which is in contact with the pre-sealing face (24) of the trunnion 17. An end face (32) is on the carrier (31). The end face (32) is remote from the end face (18) of the trunnion (17). An annular gap (26) is formed between the end face (32) and a radial face (40) of a shoulder (39) of the trunnion (17).

Tripod joints have a joint outer part and a joint inner part which are in driving connection to each other with cylindrical rolling bodies being connected in between and axial displacement and pivotability being ensured. In this case, the rolling bodies extend in rectilinear, guiding running paths of the joint outer part. The rolling bodies are mounted in a manner such that they may be displaced longitudinally via the cages but to a restricted extend radially with respect to the pressure element. The radial extent of the running paths or mating surfaces is greater than the longitudinal extent of the rolling bodies. This enables the rolling bodies to move on a path in the shape of a circular arc. The arrangement provides an improved, mechanical transmission function of the tripod joint and reduced wear as a result. The tripod joint is suitable for the displaceable and pivotable driving connection of two shaft ends, e.g., in conjunction with drive trains or side shafts of motor vehicles.

A universal joint for interconnecting a pair of rotating shafts and a method of assembling the universal joint. The universal joint includes a pair of yokes secured to the shafts and a cruciform for interconnecting the yokes. Both yokes are bifurcated to define a pair of laterally-spaced legs. Each leg has an aperture which includes a first bore adapted to receive a bearing cup therein and a second bore into which an end portion of the bearing cup extends. Each bearing cup rotatably supports one of four orthogonal trunnions extending from the cruciform. With respect to each of the yokes, a pair of axially-aligned trunnions, with bearing cups mounted thereon, are installed into the apertures so as to support the cruciform between the legs of the yoke. Thereafter, a retention member is inserted in the second bore of each aperture such that one surface of the retention member rests on the bearing cup. After the rotary axis of the first shaft is aligned with the rotary axis of the second shaft, an edge portion of the legs surrounding the second bore of each aperture is deformed to define one or more projections which engage the opposite surface of the retention member. The projections secure the retention members within the second bore of the apertures, thereby fixing the axial position of the bearing cups and trunnions relative to the yoke.

A lubricant seal adapted to prevent the leakage of lubricant between the trunnion and bearing cup of a universal joint wherein the trunnion has a cylindrical portion merging into an outwardly flaring arcuate portion, the seal including an elastomer body bonded to the interior of a stiffening ring. The body of the seal has two annular lips that extend from a thin section as two symmetrical cantilever protrusions each having a fully radiused tip, the line of symmetry for the symmetrical lips running from a point near the intersection of the trunnion diameter and the trunnion arcuate radius toward the center of the trunnion arcuate radius, the thin section above the two cantilevered protrusions allowing both lips of the seal to pivot about the line of symmetry, the first one of the lips contacting the trunnion journal diameter and being directed toward the interior of the bearing cup to maintain the level of the bearing lubricant, the second lip contacting the trunnion arcuate radius and is directed away from the interior of the bearing cup to deny the entrance of environmental contaminants, the combination of the thin section and the symmetric lips allowing the interference points of the seal to float. The body of the seal has a third annular lip having a radius greater than the radius of the second annular lip and projects outwardly of the stiffening ring and beyond the open end of the bearing cup for contacting the end of the trunnion arcuate surface remote from the trunnion cylindrical journal portion to deny entrance of environmental contaminants into the bearing cup in the absence of a separate outer seal ring.
