    摘要: Rock bits comprising wear and fracture resistant surface of this invention include a steel bit body having at least one leg extending therefrom. A steel cone is rotatably disposed on the leg. The steel cone includes a plurality of steel cutting elements that each projecting outwardly a distance therefrom. At least a portion of the cone comprises a wear resistant surface formed from a wear resistant composite material. The wear resistant composite material is made by the process of combining powders selected from the group consisting of carbides, borides, nitrides, carbonitrides, refractory metals, cermets, Co, Fe, Ni, steel, and combinations thereof, to form a material mixture. The material mixture is applied onto a designated surface of the cone, in one form or another, when the cone is in a pre-existing rigid state. Depending on the particular application, the material mixture can be applied in as a slurry to the designated surface of the cone to form a coating thereon. Alternatively, the material mixture can be preformed into a green part that is configured to be placed over the designated surface prior to being disposed thereon. The material mixture is then pressurized under conditions of elevated temperature to form the wear resistant surface. In the event that the material mixture is preformed into a green part, the preformed green part can be sintered prior to its placement on the designated cone surface. The sintered part can then be attached to the cone surface by brazing process.

    摘要: A rotary cone drill bit is provided with at least one cutter cone assembly having a machined cutting structure which will maintain an effective cutting profile despite abrasion, erosion and/or wear of the associated cutting elements. The machined cutting structure may be formed on a generally cone shaped blank by a series of lathe turns and/or plunge cuts. The cutting elements may be formed with an aggressive cutting profile. For one application, the crest of each cutting element has the general configuration of an ogee curve. A layer of hardfacing material may be applied over all or selected portions of the machined cutting structure.

    摘要: An earth-boring bit has hardfacing that has multiple grades and an overlapped portion. One of the layers is of a different grade than the other so as to provide more wear resistance. The other provides more toughness than the wear resistant layer. The more wear resistant layer has a greater volumetric density of carbide particles. The greater density is primarily achieved by using a majority of the particles of smaller dimension than in the less wear resistant hardfacing. The overlapped portion may be on an outer or gage end of the outer row of teeth.

    摘要: A wellbore mill has been invented which has milling apparatus with a starting mill and a finishing mill, the starting mill having a central channel extending longitudinally therethrough, the central channel having an interior surface with carbide cutters thereon. A milling method has been invented for finishing a window in a casing in a wellbore, the window having been begun with a first mill, the method including inserting a second mill apparatus into the wellbore adjacent the window, the second mill apparatus having a milling system with a starting mill and a finishing mill, the starting mill having a central channel extending longitudinally therethrough, the central channel having an interior surface with carbide cutters thereon, rotating the second mill apparatus to finish the window. A two-trip milling operation has also been invented for milling a finished window in a casing in a cased wellbore, the wellbore having installed therein an anchoring-orientation device, the operation using the wellbore mill described above. In one aspect the mill(s) mill off high center producing a piece of casing which enters into the hollow portion of the mill(s).

    摘要: An earth-boring bit of the rolling cutter variety is provided with hard gage inserts that protrude from the gage surface of the cutter to engage the side of the borehole for holding gage. The gage insert has a substantially flat face with sharp cutting edges formed thereon and has cutting surfaces that define a negative rake angle with respect to the sidewall of the borehole that is being sheared by the gage insert. The cutting surfaces are comprised of multiple chamfers. The face, cutting edge, and cutting surfaces of the gage insert are formed of a super-hard and abrasion-resistant material such as polycrystalline diamond or cubic boron nitride. The body of the insert is formed of a hard, fracture-tough material such as cemented tungsten carbide. The improved gage inserts provide an actively cutting gage surface that engages the sidewall of the borehole to promote shearing removal of the sidewall material. Such an improved gage insert provides an earth-boring bit with improved gage-holding ability, and improved steerability in directional drilling operations.

    摘要: An improved disc type rolling rock cutter, and novel cutterheads employing such cutters. A rock cutter with an improved, simplified structure, with compact bearing, and smooth, rounded blade shape is disclosed. The design incorporates a cutter ring, bearing, and seal into a single cutter ring assembly. The cutter may be assembled and disassembled for rework by a single worker with simple hand tools. Replacement of worn out cutter rings is done quickly and easily by removing the old ring assembly and then sliding a new ring, bearing, and seal assembly on to the cutter shaft. This simplified assembly is achieved by using a comparatively large shaft which is normally in the range of 40-50% of the ring diameter. The shaft design is sufficiently robust to permit a cantilever mount of the cutter. The unique configuration allows 30,000 lbs. or more thrust to be applied to a 5 inch diameter miniature disc. This capacity permits single disc cutter technology to be applied to smaller bits or cutterheads than previously possible. Also, a unique method of shaping and installing hard metal inserts improves cutting efficiency over the life of the cutter, and increases wear life in highly abrasive conditions.
