A device for connecting bar ends has a pipe section into which the rods to be connected are inserted with their ends. Several clamping elements each having an outer thread are provided that can be secured in threaded bores of the pipe section by being screwed in. The clamping elements are arranged in two rows and are positioned, relative to the circumference of the pipe section, on the same side of the pipe section. The clamping elements are staggered relative to one another.

The object of this invention is to provide a reinforcing bar coupling used to easily, simply, quickly and mechanically butt-joint two reinforcing bars to each other for use in reinforced concrete construction. The reinforcing bar coupling consists of a cylindrical sleeve (2) axially receiving two reinforcing bars (1) through two inlets (20), with an uneven interior surface (22) formed in the sleeve (2) to correspond to the ribs (11) formed around the external surface of the bars (1). A plurality of wedges (4) are set in the gap between the bars (1) and the sleeve (2). The internal surface of the sleeve (2) and the external surface of the bars (1) with the wedges (4) are radially compressed to butt-joint the two bars (1) by the coupling.

A section of heat treated solid steel rod receives a phosphate solution treatment and is inserted into a blind cavity of a first die member within a cold forging press. A punch is forced axially into the rod section in successive steps to cold-forge a first bore and a tubular first end portion of a coupler body. A second end portion of the coupler body is also cold-forged in successive steps after treatments and is either reduced in diameter to receive external threads or is formed with a second bore. Each of the first and second bores receives an end portion of a concrete reinforcing bar after which the tubular end portion of body is compressed or swaged inwardly to secure the body to the reinforcing bar. The second bore may also be machined with internal threads for receiving the external threads on another coupler.

A joint made between prestressing strands with a prestressing strand coupler is covered with a transparent coupler sheath having a retarded-hardening resin filling material injection opening and discharge opening provided in a tube wall thereof, and a resin filling material is injected into the transparent coupler sheath from the injection opening to fill the coupler sheath with the filling material. Thereafter, the whole outer peripheral portion of the prestressing strand joint, including the coupler sheath, is embedded with placed concrete. Tension is applied to the prestressing strands after the concrete has hardened and before the resin filling material hardens, thereby completing an excellent prestressing strand joint structure. According to the present invention, the filling condition of the resin filling material in the coupler sheath around the prestressing strand joint can readily be confirmed by visual observation. Therefore, the operation of filling the filling material can be carried out completely. Further, the wedges present in the prestressing strand coupler are allowed to properly bite into the prestressing strands in response to the prestressing strand tensioning operation performed before the filling material hardens. Thus, a superior joint structure is provided.

A high strength reinforcing bar splice uses a contractible jaw assembly bridging the bar ends to be joined. The jaw assembly includes interior teeth designed to bite into the projecting ribs or deformations on the outside of the bar ends which form the overall diameter of the bar but not the core or nominal diameter of the bar. The jaw assembly is constricted from both axial ends by driving tapered locking collars on each end of the jaw assembly with a tool while concurrently causing the jaw assembly to constrict and bite into the bar ends. When the tool is removed, the collars remain in place locking the jaw assembly closed. The splice provides not only high tensile and compressive strengths but also has good fatigue and dynamic strength to qualify as a Type 2 coupler.

A bar connection or splice and method uses a cage of relatively short bars which may be smaller reinforcing bars or threaded bars or rods. The bars of the cage may be joined by rings or wires and clamped to bridge or lap aligned bar ends. In one form, the concrete may be cast directly around to cage and bar ends to form the equivalent of a butt joined lap splice. In an enhanced form, the cage is included in a sleeve and set screws clamp the bars, cage and sleeve together. The sleeve may be filled with a hardenable matrix such as resin or grout, and then concrete is cast around the connection. The number of sets screws and bars of the cage may vary widely to form vertical and horizontal splices of axially aligned bar of the same or transitional sizes.

A method of constructing a concrete block wall of concrete blocks each having one or more vertical openings includes the steps of the layering the blocks one upon the other in positions that generally align the vertical openings to initiate formation of the wall and placing a first reinforcing bar through the aligned openings, the first bar having a diameter, the lower end of the bar being anchored at a lower portion of the wall. A connector is placed on the upper end of the first bar, the connector having upper and lower end portions, a central longitudinal open ended bore and at least one reduced diameter section that extends inwardly from the interior surface of the connector wall. Additional layers of concrete blocks can then be added to the wall in positions that generally align the block openings of the added blocks with the first bar. After these additional layers of blocks have been added, a second reinforcing bar is placed through the aligned block openings of the additional layers of blocks until the second reinforcing bar is inserted into the connector. The connector tightly grips each respective bar to form a frictional engagement of the connector and the bars. The method prevents the extra work of having to lift each block above two bars in the making of the additional block layers.

The invention relates to thread formation and particularly to the formation of threads on deformed steel reinforcing rods. The method of forming a thread on the steel reinforcing rod comprises the steps of cold upsetting an end region (1) of a deformed steel reinforcing rod having a nominal diameter, the upsetting being arranged to increase the diameter of the end region to a new, upset, diameter greater than the nominal diameter, rolling a thread onto the end region (1) so as to produce a threaded region having a thread major diameter which is greater than the nominal diameter and a thread minor diameter which is less than the nominal diameter. The formation of such a thread enables the production of mechanical connections between pairs of rods, the connections having a strength greater than that of the rods being connected to one another.
