The invention relates to modified natural clays made organophilic by means of a polar modifier for increasing their capability of bonding to organic media receiving them, which are composed of natural clays containing, in their structures, monovalent and/or multivalent metal ions and a polar modifier for modifying the surface state of said clays, which is chosen from the group of oligomers having hydrocarbon chains containing carboxylic acid functional groups. The invention is used as organophilic mineral fillers in polymers.

An intercalated layered silicate comprises a layered silicate and an intercalating agent sorbed between the silicate layers of the layered silicate. The amount of intercalating agent is effective to provide an average interlayer spacing between the silicate layers of at least about 20 Å. The intercalating agent comprises one or more of fatty acid esters of sorbitan, ethoxylated fatty esters of sorbitan, fatty acid esters of glycerol, fatty acid esters of polyglycerol, fatty acid amide waxes, variants of amide waxes, and variants of amides. The intercalated layered silicate may be exfoliated by mixing it with a matrix medium and adding sufficient energy to form a dispersed-particle composition. A packaging film, such as a food packaging film, may comprise the dispersed-particle composition.

A new mixed layer silicate useful for industrial materials is provided.The mixed layer silicate is obtained by a specific synthesis method. The mixed layer silicate includes non-swelling 2:1 type layered silicate layers having a layer charge of 0 or non-swelling 2:1 type layered silicate layers having a layer charge of 0.6 to 1 and including potassium ions between layers and swelling 2:1 type layered silicate layers having a layer charge of 0.2 to 0.6 and including exchangeable cations between layers. The mixed layer silicate has a structure in which individual layers are laminated in a regular order in a lamination direction (regularly mixed layer structure). Furthermore, an organic-inorganic composite material is prepared through intercalation of a positive charge organic compound into the swelling 2:1 type layered silicate layers in the resulting mixed layer silicate, and the resulting organic-inorganic composite material is swollen and peeled in a polymer, so that a polymer composite material in which silicate sheet sets, each set including a few silicate sheets, are homogeneously dispersed in the polymer can be obtained.
