Abstract:
A reimageable layer of an imaging member is provided with a dampening fluid layer. The reimageable layer has specific properties such as composition, surface profile, and so on so as to be well suited for receipt and carrying the dampening fluid layer. An optical patterning subsystem such as a scanned modulated laser patterns the dampening fluid layer. Ink having a first set of properties such as color, composition, etc., is applied at an inking subsystem such that it selectively resides in voids formed by the patterning subsystem in the dampening fluid layer to thereby form an inked latent image. The inked latent image is then transferred to a substrate, and the reimageable surface cleaned. The process is repeated for a second ink having properties different than the first. Each ink image may successively be applied to the substrate, or a composite image may be formed then applied to the substrate.
Abstract:
A printing unit of a web-fed rotary press, with several printing couples, wherein each printing couple has a form cylinder, a transfer cylinder, an inking couple and preferably a dampening unit. At least one printing couple of the printing unit is positioned on each side of the printing unit, wherein on both sides of the printing unit, the inking couple and possibly the dampening unit of the printing couple or of each printing couple arranged on the respective side of the printing unit form an inking module. Each inking module of the printing unit can be moved relative to the other assemblies of the printing unit by an air cushion conveyance device.
Abstract:
A web-fed rotary printing press is structured having two end-surface defining side frames. At least one printing unit, with at least two cooperating printing unit cylinders, is supported between these side frames. At least one of the at least two cooperating cylinders is pre-assembled as a cylinder unit that has side frames and face engaging bearing unit. The at least one printing unit can be placed between the side frames as the one-piece cylinder unit comprising the structural cylinder.
Abstract:
A printing press includes a frame that supports one or more printing units. Each printing unit includes a retractable inker module cantileverly supported by the frame, an ink injection system having a pump, a sidelay registration mechanism for one or more plate cylinders of the printing unit, an extension sleeve extending a length of a plate cylinder sleeve, and an expandable layer for each blanket cylinder and plate cylinder that provides changing the inner diameter of the blanket cylinder and the plate cylinder.
Abstract:
A printing press is comprised of at least one printing cylinder. A displaceable inking unit and a displaceable plate changing device can alternatingly be placed against the printing cylinder or can be moved out of contact with it. The inking unit and the plate changing device are coupled together so that their respective displacements are accomplished by a common drive. The two move in opposite directions with respect to the printing cylinder and may be connected together. Alternatively, each may have its own drive, with the two drives being coupled together by a common controller.
Abstract:
An inking unit for printing units of rotary presses is independent of the printing unit and is configured as a self-contained unit. The linking unit can be removed from the printing unit and has a dedicated drive for a plurality of rolls, the drive being arranged on side walls which are assigned to the inking unit.

Abstract:
An apparatus is provided which combines an interchangeable ink cassette assembly and a printing press drawer. The ink cassette which includes an ink pan, an anilox roll, and a meter roll may be removably attached to a printing press drawer such that the ink pan and the rolls can be removed as an integral unit from the printing press. Removal of the ink pan and rolls facilitates cleaning of the rolls and the pan. Further, a second assembly may quickly replace the removed assembly to reduce significantly the downtime of the press.

Abstract:
A printing unit includes a plate cylinder, a blanket cylinder for printing a first side of a web of material, and an inker for inking the plate cylinder, the inker being movable between an active position and an inactive position, the inker contacting the plate cylinder in the active position and the inker being separated from the plate cylinder in the inactive position. A plate operation unit such as a direct imaging device or a plate exchanger is movable into the active position of the inker when the inker is in the inactive position.
