Abstract: An instrument includes an ultrasonic blade, a first fluid port in communication with the distal opening of the ultrasonic blade, a clamp arm, an irrigation member positioned adjacent to the distal end of the ultrasonic blade, and a second fluid port in communication with the irrigation member. The ultrasonic blade defines a distal opening. The ultrasonic blade is operable in a first mode to emulsify tissue that is distally positioned relative to the ultrasonic blade. The ultrasonic blade is further operable in a second mode to transect and seal tissue that is transversely positioned relative to the ultrasonic blade. The clamp arm is pivotable toward and away from the ultrasonic blade.

The anvil includes an underside having staple forming surface configured to receive staples driven through the deck. The buttress assembly comprises a buttress body and an adhesive material. The buttress body defines a plurality of cells. The adhesive material comprises a polymer. The polymer is bioabsorbable. A first portion of the adhesive material is located within cells of the plurality of cells. A second portion of the adhesive material is located on the buttress body outside the plurality of cells.

Pleurodesis can be encouraged through delivery of the adjunct to the lung tissue.

Abstract: A surgical instrument includes an end effector with a staple cartridge. The staple cartridge includes a deck, a terminal driver assembly, and a wedge sled. The terminal driver assembly is positioned adjacent to a distal tip of the staple cartridge. The terminal driver assembly is configured to receive a first terminal portion of staples in the staple cartridge. The terminal driver assembly at least partially defines a storage space therebelow within jaw of the end effector. The wedge sled is configured to longitudinally slide proximate to the deck and engage the terminal driver assembly and force the terminal portion of the plurality of staples toward the anvil for formation in tissue. At least a majority of the wedge sled is configured to fit within the storage space and not slide distally beyond the terminal driver assembly when the wedge sled is in the distal sled position.

Abstract: Methods and devices for using surgical devices with articulating end effectors are provided. Surgical devices with articulating end effectors can provide rotary driven pivoting of the end effector. In some embodiments, the device can include a handle, a first and a second tube extending from the handle, the second tube disposed within the first tube, and an end effector that includes a pair of distal jaws configured to move in response to rotation of the first tube about a longitudinal axis thereof and rotation of the second tube about a longitudinal axis thereof. The jaws can move in two different ways depending on whether the first and second tubes are rotating in a same direction as one another or in different ways than each other. The jaws can open/close and articulate using the same mechanical mechanism. The device can be powered, or the device can be non-powered.

Abstract: A retainer for assembling tissue thickness compensators to a surgical stapler can comprise a grip, a first surface for supporting a first tissue thickness compensator, a second surface for supporting a second tissue thickness compensator, and clips for aligning and attaching the retainer to the surgical stapler. The clips may align and attach the retainer to a staple cartridge of the surgical instrument. The clips may align the retainer with an anvil of the surgical instrument. An insertion tool may be used in combination with the retainer to insert the retainer into the surgical stapler and to push the tissue thickness compensators against the anvil and/or the staple cartridge of the surgical instrument.

Abstract: An electrosurgical device comprises a body, an end effector, a cutting member, and a shaft. The end effector includes a pair of jaws that are operable to deliver RF energy to tissue that is clamped between the jaws. The shaft includes an articulation section that is operable to selectively position the end effector at non-parallel positions relative to the longitudinal axis of the shaft. Some versions include a rotation section that is distal to the articulation section. The rotation section is operable to rotate the end effector relative to the articulation section.
