Abstract: An electrochemical cell unit and stack includes a separator plate overlying a cell layer. The separator plate has a selectively shaped three-dimensional region that overlies at least part of an electrochemically active cell region. In that three-dimensional region the separator plate has been deformed into a first plurality of outwardly extending dimpled protrusions that define the height of a first fluid volume on a first side of the separator plate, and a second plurality of outwardly extending dimpled protrusions that define the height of a second fluid volume on a second side of the separator plate. A mid-plane region is disposed between the protrusions and the mid-plane region is so shaped as selectively to vary its height in at least one direction across the active cell region such that the interrelated respective heights of the first and second fluid volumes are correspondingly increased and decreased as a result.

separating out gas passage openings from an edge web portion of the starting material, wherein after the gas passage openings have been separated out the edge web portion is shaped such that the edge web is formed from the edge web portion.-

Abstract: An electrochemical cell (3) for use in a fuel cell stack (1) comprising a resilient electrical conduction member sub-assembly (10, 16) having a first flow plate (5, 9), a second flow plate (6, 8) and a bipolar plate (11, 22). A fluid chamber (17, 19) is created by the first flow plate (5, 9), the second flow plate (6, 8), the bipolar plate (11, 22) and an electrode (13, 18) and has an inflow duct (59, 63) and an outflow duct (61, 65). A resilient electrical conduction member (15, 20) is located within the fluid chamber (17, 19) so that in use, a fluid can flow between the inflow duct (59, 61) and the outflow duct (61, 65). The resilient electrical conduction member (15, 20) is in electrically conductive contact with the bipolar plate (11, 22) and with the electrode (13, 18) via a plurality of electrical contacts (51) and the resilient electrical conduction member (15, 20) is compressed between the bipolar plate (11, 22) and the electrode (13, 18).

Abstract: A fuel electrode incorporates a first and second corrugated portion that are attached to each other at offset angles respect to their corrugation axis and therefore reinforce each other. A first corrugated portion may extend orthogonally with respect to a second corrugated portion. The first and second corrugated portions may be formed from metal wire and may therefore have a very high volumetric void fraction and a high surface area to volume ratio (sa/vol). In addition, the strands of the wire may be selected to enable high conductivity to the current collectors while maximizing the sa/vol. In addition, the shape of the corrugation, including the period distance, amplitude and geometry may be selected with respect to the stiffness requirements and electrochemical cell application factors. The first and second corrugated portions may be calendared or crushed to reduce thickness of the fuel electrode.

Abstract: A bipolar plate for a fuel cell includes an anode plate and a cathode plate. The anode plate has hydrogen flow channels on a first side of the anode plate and coolant channels on a second side of the anode plate. The cathode plate has a first side disposed against the second side of the anode plate to cover the coolant channels and has a second side defining a recessed pocket configured to receive a stream of air. A flow guide is disposed in the pocket such that an inlet manifold is formed along a first edge of the flow guide and an outlet manifold is formed along a second edge of the flow guide. The flow guide defines channels extending from the inlet manifold to the outlet manifold. A plurality of openings is defined by through the flow guide.
