A supporting mechanism of the invention is for supporting a pinch roller for use in a magnetic recording/reproducing apparatus. A pinch roller is rotatably mounted on a fixing shaft that includes two separate parts, a supporting shaft and a hollow shaft. The fine adjustment of the marginal movement height of the pinch roller can be simplified in the thrust direction of the shafts. The shapes of the supporting shaft and the hollow shaft are simple to machine, and the smoothness of cylindrical surface can easily be achieved. The pinch roller is held at a predetermined height with respect to a recording tape. The supporting shaft press-fittingly extends through the hollow shaft. The hollow shaft is adjustably secured to the supporting shaft and is positioned in an axial direction of the supporting shaft so that the height of the pinch roller is adjusted with respect to the recording tape.

The tape drive unit of the present invention is constructed such that the reverse rotation of a motor (16) causes a mode cam (32) to drive for setting any mode of normal play, reverse play, fast forward and rewinding. Thereafter the forward rotation of the motor (16) causes a reel shaft (3) or a reel shaft (4) to rotationally drive according to the mode and a head base (51) is slid in normal play or reverse play modes, to set up a magnetic head and pinch rollers. With such construction, each operation of normal play, reverse play, fast forward and rewinding can be performed without using a plunger or microcomputer, thereby eliminating the fear of troubles due to the plunger malfunction or a microcomputer bug.

A master tape moves between first supply and take-up reels over a pinch roller. A slave tape moves between second supply and take-up reels over a capstan. First and second guides are respectively constructed and positioned to regulate the movement of the master and slave tapes to aligned positions on the pinch roller and the capstan. A heater between the pinch roller and the second guide heats essentially only a thermomagnetic layer on the slave tape to at least the Curie temperature. The heater is adjustably positioned to facilitate the movement of the slave tape to the aligned position on the capstan. Brake shoes respectively between the first guide and the first supply reel, and between the second guide and the second supply reel, control master and slave tape tensions and damp any variations in tensions. The pinch roller is movable to a first position, locked in position relative to the capstan, to abut the capstan and facilitate the transfer of magnetic information from the master tape to the slave tape. In this disposition, the pinch roller locks the heater in a fixed position relative to the capstan. The pinch roller and the associated guide are movable to a second position displaced from the capstan to facilitate the disposition of the master tape on the pinch roller. The heater is pivotable relative to the capstan to facilitate the disposition of the slave tape on the capstan. The rotational axis of the capstan, preferably of a unitary construction, is fixed.

A reel brake device of a deck in a camera-integrated type video cassette recorder system, comprising a pinch arm having an extension extending downwardly from one side portion of the pinch arm, a first lever connected operatively to the pinch arm and a second lever connected operatively to the first lever and provided with a felt for applying a brake force to a take-up reel. A torsion spring is disposed between the first lever and the second lever to urge the first lever and the second lever away from each other. Pivotal movement of the pinch arm causes the first lever to move pivotally, so that the second lever moves pivotally by virtue of the torsion spring to make the felt come into pressing contact with the take-up reel. In order to compress the torsion spring and thus increase the brake force applied to the take-up reel by the felt, the first lever and the second lever have a pin and a cam slot receiving the pin, respectively.
