Method and system are provided for operating a generator using a dynamic capability curve. In one embodiment, the method allows providing a family of static capability curves corresponding to nominal reference levels of pressure of a fluid for cooling the generator. The method further allows acquiring data indicative of the actual pressure of the cooling fluid. A dynamic capability curve is generated to be responsive to the actual pressure of the cooling fluid. The family of static capability curves may be displayed relative to the dynamic capability curve, thereby allowing the operator to monitor and control the operation of the generator based on the actual pressure of the cooling fluid and further in view of at least one of the nominal reference levels of pressure for the cooling fluid.

A generator field regulator circuit communicates with a field winding of a Lundell machine and includes a first transistor. A second transistor has a source that communicates with a drain of the first transistor and a drain that communicates with one end of the field winding. A free-wheeling diode communicates with the drain of the first transistor and a source of the second transistor. An overvoltage detection circuit modulates a gate of the second transistor. A pulse width modulation (PWM) circuit modulates a gate of the first transistor to maintain generator rectified voltage at a nominal level. The overvoltage detection circuit outputs an overvoltage shutdown signal to the PWM circuit during a full-load dump mode to turn off the first transistor, which turns off the second transistor. The overvoltage shutdown signal is disabled when a terminal voltage of a generator falls below a predetermined voltage.

As viewed from the power grid and its stakeholders' perspective, enhanced renewable facilities are more stiff than conventional renewable facilities, and produce power that is as commercially valuable and fungible as electric power produced by traditional plants such as fossil fuel power plants, hydroelectric plants, nuclear plants and the like. xMs and SMs, or more generally yMs, fulfill the demands of stiffness and reduced variability, which have conventionally limited the commercial usefulness of a large scale use of renewables delivering power to a power grid.

A method for operating a switched reluctance electrical generator in a manner that is highly efficient involves initially performing a mapping technique to obtain data relating to all of the possible operating conditions of the generator system that generate the desired output power. This mapping technique can be performed empirically or by computer simulation. Then, the effective phase currents supplied to the windings on the stator are measured or calculated. Next, the optimum conduction angles can be selected as those turn-on angles and turn-off angles that occur using the smallest effective phase currents supplied to the windings on the stator. Lastly, the generator system is operated using the selected optimum turn-on and turn-off angles. If desired, a feedback loop can be provided for comparing the actual output power that is generated by the generator system with a desired reference output power level to insure that such actual output power is maintained at or near the desired output power. To accomplish this, the conduction angles can be adjusted in response to such comparison to increase or decrease the actual output power as necessary.
