An improved method for replicating a spiral groove pattern. The pattern is recorded in a photoresist layer which is then developed to reproduce the pattern in the photoresist layer. The pattern is transferred to a metal layer and formed in the surface of a plastic substrate. The improvement comprises the additional steps of uniformly irradiating the photoresist layer and removing the irradiated photoresist surface layer.

A system for positioning a body having two opposed edges and having a first axis oriented to pass through the two edges. A beam of light oriented along a second axis orthogonal to the first axis images one or both of the edges onto all or a portion of a photodetector array which is aligned in a direction parallel to the first axis. The array is scanned to obtain a light intensity transition profile of all or part of the projected image whereby the profile has either one or two 50% intensity points. The body is then shifted until both of the 50% intensity points strike predetermined locations on the array indicating that both the edges are included in the image. The body is shifted along the first axis until the fifty percent (50%) intensity point along the transition profile strikes a predetermined location along the photodetector array. The body is also moved along the second axis until the slope of the intensity transition profile is maximized, thereby obtaining an in-focus position. The body is then translated along a third axis, substantially orthogonal to the first and the second axes, until the minimum in the intensity transition profile drops to a predetermined percent of the full intensity value.

Apparatus for sharpening a diamond cutting stylus for use in recording video signal information in a metal master includes a source of high energy particles such as an ion milling machine. The high energy source provides a beam of high energy particles having a cross-sectional area perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the beam that is large compared to a given area on a mounting face of the stylus which is to be bombarded by the beam during the sharpening operation. Further, the apparatus includes a masking block for masking a first portion of the cutting stylus. The masking block is positioned with respect to the high energy source to intercept the particles in the beam directed at the first portion of the cutting stylus. A second portion of the cutting stylus which includes the given area is exposed to the high energy particles such that the second portion of the cutting stylus is removed.

A second silicon oxide layer having a refractive index of between about 1.30 and 1.48 as measured by ellipsometry is glow discharge deposited onto the first layer.

In a playback system employing a stylus to recover recorded signals from a video disc when relative motion between the disc and the stylus is established, a rotary stylus reshaper is provided. A freely pivoted, light stylus-arm, carry the stylus, is mounted in a housing employed for movement of the stylus between a rest position and a play position. A rotatable drum, having an axle of rotation perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the stylus-arm, is located under the stylus when the stylus is at the rest position. The drum has a plurality of circular and coaxial grooves, concentric with the drum, the grooves having walls of abrasive material dimensioned and configured for the purpose of reshaping worn stylus to a desired shape. A friction wheel, mounted on the axle carrying the drum, engages the turntable and causes rotation of the drum when the stylus is lowered into an abrasive groove, permitting reshaping of the stylus. Means, which may be manually or automatically actuated, are provided for lowering and raising of the stylus into and out of engagement with an abrasive groove on the drum when the stylus is at the rest position. A cleaning brush having its bristles in contact with the drum is secured to the board for the purpose of cleaning the drum.

A keel-tipped stylus comprises a tapering body, a fore-and-aft constricted terminal portion and shoulders joining the tapering body to the constricted terminal portion. To form a keel-tipped stylus, a tapering support element, made from hard material--such as diamond or sapphire-- is run on an abrasive lapping disc having a deep coarse-pitched groove. The lands on the lapping disc lap the shoulders of the keel-tipped stylus and the walls of the abrasive groove form the substantially parallel fore-and-aft surfaces of the constricted terminal portion. The abrasive groove can be deeper than the height of the keel tip; in that case, the bottom surface of the constricted terminal portion can be lapped later. Alternately, the bottom of the abrasive groove can be positioned such that it laps the bottom surface of the constricted terminal portion during the concluding portion of the keel-lapping procedure.
