摘要: The invention is directed to a magnetic storage medium recorded with an amplitude-based servo pattern in which one or more first servo windows positioned above a centerline of a servo track have a different width than one or more second servo windows positioned below the centerline. The first servo windows may be larger or smaller than the second servo windows. In either case, by detecting the widths of the servo windows and detecting signal amplitude as a servo head passes relative to the servo track, servo tracking can be achieved without the use or need for additional synchronization marks in the servo pattern.

摘要: A multi-channel head position control apparatus and a method of controlling the position of the multi-channel head in which even if the width of a tape-like recording medium is changed, each of unit recording heads constituting a multi-channel head can be aligned with corresponding track centers. The multi-channel head having a plurality of unit recording heads arrayed in the longitudinal direction is disposed so that the alignment direction of the unit recording heads forms an azimuth angle relative to the running direction of the tape-like recording medium. The position of the multi-channel head is controlled by a supporting section in accordance with a control signal recorded on the tape-like recording medium and detected by a detecting section so that the alignment between each of the unit recording heads and corresponding track center is maintained.

摘要: A method to calibrate a transducer, whereby the transducer provides a first signal, and whereby a reference provides a reference signal. The first signal is sampled at a sampling rate comprising a reference frequency, and a digital measured first signal waveform is formed. The reference signal is sampled at the sampling rate, and a digital measured reference signal waveform is formed. The real and imaginary components of the measured first signal waveform are determined at (P) harmonics of the reference frequency. A filtered first signal waveform is formed using those real and imaginary components. The real and imaginary components of the measured reference signal waveform are determined at (P) harmonics of the reference frequency. A filtered reference signal waveform is formed using those real and imaginary components. A transfer function is formed using the filtered first signal waveform and the filtered reference signal waveform. A calibration curve is formed using that transfer function.

摘要: A staggered calibration track comprising a plurality of calibration tracks for use positioning a tape drive tape head for reading and writing data to and from multiple data tracks. The staggered calibration track is written by positioning the write head to a predetermined location and moving the tape media horizontally as the vertical position of the tape head is incremented in a stepwise alignment. Locating one of the plurality of calibration tracks is accomplished by positioning the read head at the predetermined location corresponding to the edge of the particular calibration track and moving the tape media horizontally as the read head output is recorded. The particular calibration tracks vertical position is derived using the average read head output.

摘要: A lateral tape sensor for a tape drive having a tape head that is not capable of moving vertically as quickly as tape media, wherein the sensor senses lateral movement of tape media as it moves along a tape path between a storage reel and a take-up reel. The lateral tape motion sensor comprising a means for sensing the position of at least one edge of the tape media and a means for comparing the at least one edge position to predetermined thresholds to determine if the tape media moved laterally. When the lateral movement exceeds predetermined thresholds, the tape drive processor and control circuits respond to prevent accidentally overwriting data previously written on an adjacent track during a write operation, to adjust the tape head to locate data being read following lateral tape motion that occurs during a read operation or to warn the user of poor tape media quality.

摘要: The invention relates to a magnetic tape (10) formatted by means of a magnetic emboss head (60), and an apparatus comprising a magnetic data head (20) which is movable in a transverse direction (y) by means of an actuator (40). By means of the magnetic emboss head (60) the magnetic tape (10) has been provided with a pattern of servotracks ST1-ST17 which extend in a longitudinal direction (x). The odd-numbered servotracks contain a first servosignal and the even-numbered servotracks contain a second servosignal which is in phase opposition to the first servosignal. The servotracks ST2-ST8 and ST10-ST16 have a typical width W1 and form a group of two bands of seven servotracks which are separated by a band having a typical width Dnull(knullnull)W1, where knull0, 1, 2 etc. The pattern of servotracks is suited to position a magnetic data head (20) of a first generation at four different positions and suited to position a magnetic data head (120) of a second generation at eight different positions by controlling the actuator in response to the servosignal (V1-V4) read by the data channels.

摘要: An arrangement and method for compensating for the written-in tracking error for a linear tape drive filters out spatial error components of a position error signal (PES). The position information contained within A, B pairs of servo stripes, and within C, D pairs of stripes is preserved. The timing between the A and C bursts and the C and A bursts is filtered, such as by low pass filtering, to filter out the error that can be written-in by a servo writer. The timing signal for the A, B bursts and C, D bursts are divided by the filtered timing signals for the AC and CA timing signals, respectively. This ratio provides the filtered PES signal used by a head positioner to precisely position the head with respect to the tape.

摘要: First, data is read from tracks formed on a tape-shaped recording medium by heads disposed on a rotary drum, to measure error rates. Next, of the tracks formed on the tape-shaped recording medium, a worst track suffering the highest error rate is detected based on the error rates thus measured. Then, a pair of reproducing heads that can reproduce the worst track thus detected at the lowest error rates is detected from the measured error rates. Thereafter, tracking servo control is performed such that the worst track can be scanned by the pair of reproducing heads. As a result, a reproducing apparatus capable of proper reproduction even when recorded tracks undergo variations in width and reproducing heads are erroneously mounted.

摘要: A system and method to minimize the contribution of head channel spacing to the negative effects of transverse changes in dimensions of recording media having prerecorded servopositioning tracks. Multiple channels on the recording head are separated into multiple groups of head channels, and each group of heads is independently positioned relative to the pre-written servo tracks. The head comprises an actuator for each pair of head groups. The actuator adjusts the relative spacing between members of the pair in response to position error signals indicating misalignment between the heads and the pre-written servopositioning tracks on the medium.
