A rectilinear edge portion is provided on a bolt head or a spacer, or both, to avoid point contact of the bolt head or spacer and the flange face or fillet. The rectilinear edge portion includes a convexly-curved surface that faces the fillet. The incidence of cracks between a bolt hole and the fillet, as well as the incidence of circumferential cracks between adjacent bolt holes is significantly reduced.

The ridge portions and base portions may be integrally forged as a pair of symmetrical, self-aligning, inserts (40) separate from, but mating with, opposite sides of the neck when a load is applied to the bolt. A doughnut-shaped, repair washer (50) for sealing enlarged holes has a plurality of teeth (53) integral with a flat or curved bottom major surface for gripping a surface which is to be sealed and grooves (51, 54) which cooperate with the bolt and a nut (23) to simultaneously seal the bore (52) at the top and bottom surfaces.

An apparatus for reducing the bending stress imparted to threaded fasteners in flanged connections is disclosed. The apparatus includes a stress reducing washer positioned between the head of the threaded fastener and a counterbore in the backface of the flange. In a first embodiment, the stress reducing washer uses a tapered upper surface oriented with respect to the flange to compensate for flange deflection as the threaded fastener is tightened to a predetermined torque value. Second and third embodiments utilizing spherical and cylindrical surfaces are also shown. A fourth embodiment eliminates the need for the stress reducing washer and machines the tapered surface in the backface of the flange.

The washer is provided with a body having a top surface, a thickness dimension, and bottom surface having a substantially planar region.
