    Abstract: The present invention relates to a washing machine comprising an outer tub containing water, and an inner tub disposed in the outer tub to accommodate laundry and rotated about a horizontal axis. The washing machine includes: a motor for providing rotational force; an outer shaft that has a first hollow, and rotates the inner tub; an inner shaft disposed in the first hollow and rotated by the motor; a pulsator disposed in the inner tub and coupled with the inner shaft; a planetary gear train for transmitting rotational force of the motor; a carrier mover which has an outer circumferential surface that is spline-coupled to an inner circumferential surface of the outer shaft, and an inner circumferential surface that is screwed with an outer circumferential surface of the clutch carrier; and a stopper restricting movement of the carrier mover, thereby achieving various washing modes with a simple mechanism by rotating the inner tub and the pulsator.

    Abstract: An appliance having a driving mechanism is provided, the appliance (10) comprising two rotatable portions (32, 34) which are rotatable by the driving mechanism (50) about an axis (40). The driving mechanism (50) comprises a gearbox (60) having an input gear (116), two output gears (240, 304) and a locking mechanism (250, 252, 318) movable between a first position and a second position. The arrangement is such that, when the locking mechanism (250, 252, 318) is in the first position and the input gear (116) is driven, both output gears (240, 304) rotate in the same direction and, when the locking mechanism (250, 252, 318) is in the second position and the input gear (116) is driven, the output gears (240, 304) rotate in opposite directions. The arrangement of the axis (40) is horizontal or substantially horizontal. The invention is particularly suitable for use in a front-loading washing machine (10) having a drum (30) comprising two rotatable portions (32, 34). The driving mechanism (50) can be used to selectively cause rotation of the rotatable portions (32, 34) either in the same direction or in opposite directions.

    Abstract: A tethering system is provided for a washing machine having a hung strut suspension. The tethering system includes a pair of pulleys or cams pivotally mounted in the cabinet. A pair of subframe straps are secured between the cams and the subframe of the hung assembly. An anti-rotation strap extends partially around the tub with opposite ends secured to the cams. When the tub of the machine is filled with water, the hung assembly moves downwardly due to the weight of the water, thereby rotating the cams which tighten the anti-rotation strap into frictional engagement with the tub. Thus rotation and oscillation of the tub is prevented during the agitation and low speed spin cycles of the machine.
