POLYESTERS IN POWDER FORM ARE PREPARED BY MASS POLYMERIZATION OF BETA-PROPIOLACTONES UTILIZING INTENSIVE MIXING TO PREVENT AGGLOMERATION OF THE POLYMERS AND PROMOTE THE FORMATION OF UNIFORM PARTICLES. THE MIXING IS BEST ACCOMPLISHED USING A HELICAL BAND STIRRER THAT ROTATES IN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO THE REACTOR WALL.

THE INVENTION RESIDES IN A NOVEL CATALYST SYSTEM USED FOR THE POLYMERIZATION OF PIVALOLACTONE. THESE CATALYSTS OR INITATORS ARE PRODUCED FROM POLYBASIC ACIDS AND QUATERNARY AMMONIUM SALTS.
Abstract:
Between 50 and 85 per cent of a beta-lactone such as pivalolactone is bulk polymerized in an initial reactor at a maximum temperature of 300* C. The polymerization is then continued in at least one subsequent reactor. Preferably, the reactors are gear pumps.

DELTA, EPSILON, AND ZETA LACTONES ARE POLYMERIZED IN THE PRESENCE OF STRONG ORGANIC ACIDS SUCH AS HALOGEN ACTIVATED CARBOXYLIC ACIDS OR SULFONIC ACIDS AS CATALYST AND COMPOUNDS OF THE FORMULA L-CH2OH AS INITIATOR WHEREIN L CONTAINS ETHYLENIC UNSATURATION ACTIVATED BY AMIDE OR ESTER LINKAGES. THE RESULTING TERMINALLY UNSATURATED POLYLACTONES ARE SUITABLE FOR COPOLYMERIZATION WITH ETHYLENICALLY UNSATURATED MONOMERS.

A method of producing poly- Alpha , Alpha -disubstituted- Beta propiolactones by ring-opening polymerizing a compound of the formula wherein R1 and R2 are aryl or alkyl having 1-4 carbon atoms, in the presence of an anionic polymerization catalyst, characterized by conducting the polymerization in the presence of a molecular weight controlling agent selected from the group consisting of acid anhydrides, aldehydes, sulfoxides, organic acids and phenolic compounds in order to control the molecular weight of the polymer.
