摘要: A method of minimizing the formation of a rhodium-platinum defect in a glass or glass ceramic material or in the melt thereof is provided. The method includes providing a vessel made of a platinum-rhodium alloy for use in a manufacturing process for obtaining the material, and an interface between the vessel and the melt is present. The method can include providing sufficient partial pressures of hydrogen outside and inside the vessel for controlling the partial pressure of oxygen in a region of the melt adjacent to the interface. A method of minimizing the formation of, or counteracting the impact of, a localized thermal, electrical, or composition cell in the melt during a manufacturing process is also provided. The method can include adding a multivalent compound to the melt, adding a mixer to the finer tube, adding a mixing step to the manufacturing process, or amplifying the mixing.

摘要: A continuous glass-melting tank furnace includes a melting compartment including a melting tank having a lower part, and a superstructure equipped with heaters for receiving and melting raw batch material. Additionally included is a separate refining compartment including a refining tank and a superstructure equipped with a further heater, the refining tank having a lower part and including a transverse sill which divides the refining tank into an upstream refining cell and a downstream refining cell, each of the upstream refining cell and the downstream refining cell having respective upstream ends and downstream ends, and the further heater being arranged to heat melt in the upstream refining cell for creating a spring zone located closer to the downstream end of the upstream refining cell and a circulation of melt in the upstream refining cell which feeds the spring zone. A throat allowing communication between the lower parts of the melting tank and the refining tank, and a conditioning tank for receiving melt from the refining tank are also included.

摘要: A continuous tank-type glass melting furnace containing a bath of molten glass and having a waist section of reduced width whereat a submerged weir extends across the path of the molten glass bath flowing therethrough. The weir is located adjacent the floor of the waist section for modifying the flow path in the lower regions of the molten bath between the refining and conditioning zones of the furnace. Also, a surface barrier and stirrers may be provided in the waist section for improving the homogeneity of the molten bath.

摘要: Sheet glass of commercial quality is made by a Pittsburgh Process without using a shutoff. Instead, means are used to seal the kiln from the tank, and a water-cooled pipe is submerged in the glass and lowers suitably the flow; throughout ratio. the submerged pipe has a diameter of 1.2 to 5 inches and it is located so that it obstructs the return flow, being positioned so that its top is not above the mid-point of the depth of the glass, and so that its bottom it at least one-fifth of the depth of the glass above the bottom. In this way of benefits of having no shutoff are obtained: lower costs, and an avoidance of defects in the products caused by shutoff.
