    摘要: In a pencil lead manufactured through a baking step regardless of being a black lead or a colored lead, the mechanical strength of the pencil lead is further increased by coating a surface thereof with a resin. A pencil lead includes a baked lead body whose surface is covered by a covering layer made of resin that has a scratch hardness of HB or greater. The scratch hardness of the resin as a subject resin is defined as a lowest hardness index of a tester pencil that is able to form an indentation on a surface of a horizontal flat plate coated with a 5-μm thick film of the subject resin, when the surface is scratched by the tester pencil being pressed onto the surface at an angle of 45° with a load of 7.355 N.

    摘要: By kneading a composition containing a filler and an organic forming binder, extruding the composition, baking the composition in a non-oxidizing atmosphere, there is obtained a first baked lead containing, as a binder, a carbon obtained by the carbonization of the organic forming binder. Then, by heating the first baked lead in an oxidizing atmosphere to remove the binder carbon, there is formed a second baked lead composed of at least the filler. The pores of the second baked lead are impregnated with a solution containing perhydropolysilazane, subjecting the lead to a heat treatment in an inert atmosphere or an ammonia gas atmosphere to form a third baked lead containing the resultant silicon nitride. Finally, ink is filled into the pores of the third baked lead to provide a baked color pencil lead.

The baked pencil leads can be obtained by the use of a plurality of concentric conical tubular straightening plates having the sectional area of a flow path continuously decreased toward a nozzle orifice, in extruding a kneaded material mainly comprising the filler and a binder. In the baked pencil leads, strength can be remarkably improved without lowering density, and thus these baked pencil leads are excellent in the balance between the strength and the density.
