摘要: The device (1) according to the invention achieves a homogeneous, protective and insulating covering layer on the top layer of a casting ladle containing molten steel. It comprises a fixed part from which a cover wiht scrapers (21, 22) is suspended, and a rotating part (2) fitted below the scrapers (21, 22). The rotating part (2) comprises a series of troughs (12) which are uniformly distributed around a central shaft (10). The troughs (12) have a radially widening slit in the direction away from the central shaft (10). Through the rotating movement of the rotating part (2) and the levelling action of the fixed scrapers (21, 22), the bulk material is uniformly distributed over the troughs (12) of the distribution bin. A rising and falling cover (4) makes it possible to process varying volumes of bulk material.

摘要: A simple method of producing a rim-stabilized steel ingot without requiring the use of special equipment wherein a rimming-type steel is teemed into an ingot mold and thereafter allowed to rim for a suitable period of time, and then adding a particulate mixture of aluminum and an exothermic material to the top of the molten metal so that the exothermic mixture will ignite, melting and superheating the aluminum content which is driven into the molten steel at the ingot core.

摘要: Disclosed is a mold structure for casting large metallic parts such as ingots so as to avoid the formation of the "shrinkage pipe" which normally develops on the exposed top surface of such castings during their solidification. The structure comprises a cap for placement on a mold which includes a diaphragm having a front surface located to intercept radiation emitted from the top surface of the cooling metal mass and to reemit radiation back thereto, and a means for returning radiation emitted from the back surface of the diaphragm such as an infrared reflector or a stack of baffles. The cap may include means for cooling the reflective surface and suitable ports which allow the interior of the mold and cap to be evacuated. Portions of the mold adjacent its open top may be provided with insulation to prevent heat loss from the metal by conduction. Various means for providing make-up heat to the top surface of the metal mass may also be included in the structure.

摘要: Molten metal is fed to an ingot during solidification, in order to compensate for shrinkage and segregation, by electroslag remelting (ESR). The electrodes are positioned entirely in the slag and comprise an inner electrode surrounded by an outer electrode, so that current flow is substantially horizontal through the slag. Powdered solid slag can be filled in the space between the electrodes before ESR begins; and for this purpose, the lower end of the outer or surrounding electrode is temporarily closed by a metal sheet which melts when the current is turned on, thereby to release molten slag onto the bath at the top of the ingot. The electrode arrangement is useful both with consumable and with nonconsumable electrodes.

摘要: A casting powder which consists of lime, alumina and silicates (or silica), with or without alkali-metal compounds serving as fluxing agents, is made by expanding the particles from a particle size of less than 40 microns to a particle size in excess of 60 microns so that the particles are generally in the form of hollow bodies. The casting particles thus have a highly insulating character and are above the dust limit so as to reduce their environmental hazard.

摘要: A body of molten metal is provided in a lower portion of an ingot mold. A body of liquid slag is provided in said mold on top of said body of molten metal within a slag-confining wall. Heat energy is supplied to said body of liquid slag at a rate corresponding to at least 120 kilowatt-hours per metric ton of metal in said mold. The slag-confining wall is supplied on the outside thereof with a cooling fluid to cool said slag-confining wall sufficiently to maintain a layer of solid slag between said wall and said body of liquid slag. The molten metal in said mold is caused to solidify while those parts of said mold which are contacted by said metal are kept out of contact with cooling liquid.
