A device for changing model plates is used in the manufacture of sand molds for foundry molding machines. The vertical axis of the lifting mechanism intersects both the longitudinal axis of the feed mechanism and the pivot field circle of the rotary conveyor for moving the model plates between lifting and molding sites. Model plates can be changed by the device without interrupting the molding machine cycle. Also, the model plates can be positioned outside the molding machine.

An apparatus for the production of cores from fluidized sands in hot boxes comprises individual mechanisms for joining and disjoining top and bottom sections of core boxes, which are placed beyond the confines of the latter. The joining mechanism incorporates at least two spring-loaded grapples mounted on individual shafts, fitted in satellites and positioned on a transport device, so as to carry core boxes. Located at one end of each grapple is a wedging member which co-operates with a wedging member provided on the top section of each core box. The disjoining mechanism includes stops, positioned on a support frame, and rollers mounted on the other end of each grapple for interaction with the stops.

A low pressure casting process using a furnace of the channel-type induction for heating, the furnace power being automatically controlled by direct temperature measuring of the molten metal bath according to the desired casting temperature. The feeding chamber of the furnace is of pressure-type and has a protective gas with a slight over-pressure. The furnace is filled via a syphon-shaped feeding chamber whereby metal is inserted below the level of molten metal in the feeding chamber and the protective gas therein is not affected. An operator starts the casting process whereby a casting mold is closed and assumes a casting position over the casting nozzle from the furnace and metal is forced into the mold. The mold, one of several on a carousel is moved to a station wherein the casting is automatically discharged to a conveyor belt. The mold next moves to an immersion bath where it is treated, and then to a preparation station wherein it may be cleaned and cores inserted. Finally, the mold returns to the casting station. Three such molds are shown which rotate simultaneously about a common axis of the carousel. The support for each mold permits the opening of the mold into mold halves for the immersion station and the tilting of the mold for the preparation station.

Cope and drag flasks are alternately filled with chemically bonded sand on an indexing turntable, and the sand is allowed to cure or set up while still on the turntable. A machine for forming foundry moulds includes a turret supporting spaced mould frames, each of the latter having a mould portion formed therein by rotation of the turret toward a sand filling and compacting station and away therefrom. The completed mould portion may be moved to a position where a core can be set thereon and then moved to a position where the mould portions are positioned one atop another to make a stack of finished and cored moulds. When the moulds are not cored, a pair of said filling and compacting stations are provided, the turret oscillating or rotating unidirectionally from a loading position to a delivery position. Where a pair of filling and compacting stations are provided for forming cope and drag mould portions, the turret oscillates to place the two mould portions in proper position to form a mould comprised of cope and drag portions. The machine makes foundry moulds capable of being placed one atop another, a pair of moulds defining a pouring lip connected to a pouring channel in turn connected to runners and mould cavities.

Disclosed is a rotary-type continuous motion core making machine capable of carrying a number of core mold boxes, each supported on a carrier adapted to move up and down, a sand distributing system adapted to inject a foundry sand mix into each of the core boxes, and a manifold system for distributing curing and purging gases to the core boxes. The machine is capable of completing a core/mold production cycle in a single circle of turret revolution. The vertical movement of the core box carrier, horizontal radial movement of portions of the gas manifold system, and movements of other parts of the machine are generated by the turret rotation and are controlled by a number of stationary contoured cam tracks. Disclosed also is a novel catalyst gas generating system, a core box assembly containing ejector pins in the top portion thereof, and a system for collecting and assembling components into a unified core and mold assembly.
