The check valve structure prevents unwanted cylinder retraction and provides cylinder lock-up for transport without need for additional valves. When pressure is applied to the rod ends of the cylinders, the check valve structure allows fluid to flow from base ends. Orifices are inserted at the base ends of the cylinders 86 to provide optimum breakoff pressure for the check valves.

The frame sections have mounted thereto a number of tool sub-frames carrying ground engaging working tools. The tool sub-frames are pivotally movable relative to a rockshaft carried by the frame sections so as to be rotatable between a lowered operative position and a generally vertical raised non-working position. Depth control for the ground engaging tools is accomplished through the rotation of the rockshaft about its pivot lug. The frame sections are connected at the inner end to the kingpost so that the main frame members abut when placed in the working position. Each frame member is supported by a pair of wheel assemblies at the inner and distal ends respectively. The inner wheel assemblies of each frame section is steered by a link connecting the wheel spindle to the hitch member to control the orientation thereof.

The position recording device (25) generates a position signal representing the pivot position of the lower steering arms (2, 3). A piston-cylinder unit (11, 12) acts on the tractor and on the lower steering arm (2, 3). A switching circuit is provided per piston-cylinder unit (11, 12). The switching circuit includes a directional valve (33, 33′) with four ports and four switching positions. In a first position of the directional valve (33, 33′) all ports are blocked. In a second position, the cylinder chamber at the piston end is connected to the pressure agent supply source and the cylinder chamber at the piston rod end is connected to the return line. In a third position, the cylinder chamber at the piston rod end is connected to the pressure agent supply source and the cylinder chamber at the piston end is connected to the return line. In a fourth position, both cylinder chambers are connected to the return line. A switching unit (28, 28′) is provided with a guiding value (F). The guiding value (F) corresponds to the nominal position of the lower steering arm (2, 3). A position signal originates from the position recording device (25, 25′) and represents the respective position of the lower steering arm. A comparator compares the guiding value (F) with the position signal. The switching unit (28, 28′), as a function of the result of the comparison, causes the directional valve (33, 33′) to occupy one of the four positions.

A castering axis is oriented vertically to permit a castering action of the wheel assembly when the rockshaft is rotated into a working configuration. The rotation of the rockshaft re-positions the castering axis to a horizontal orientation when rotated into a transport configuration. A caster lock moves by gravity to lock the wheel assembly from moving about the castering axis when the rockshaft is in the transport configuration. The caster lock includes a latch mounted to the wheel assembly and a pivoted latch tongue mounted on the L-shaped member.

An agricultural implement, having ground engaging tools mounted on subframes that are movable through hydraulic actuators between raised transport and lowered working positions, is provided with a hydraulic circuit in which the actuators are connected in parallel with one another within a grouping of the actuators. The positioning of the ground engaging tools into a lowered working position closes the hydraulic circuit for the group of actuators. The subframes are arranged to float over ground undulations to maintain a common working depth for the ground engaging tools. The vertical movement of any one of the actuators in the common group will force a displacement of a corresponding amount of hydraulic fluid, which will then be shared by all of the remaining actuators in the corresponding group. A depth averaging control for the ground engaging tools and a mechanical headland stop apparatus are also provided for the agricultural implement.

An agricultural planter is provided with forwardly folding wing members that allow conversion of the planter from a laterally extending operating position to a compact transport position. To increase stability for the planter, the draw bar telescopes as the wing members are folded forwardly into the transport position. Brace members interconnect a forward portion of the draw bar and the wing members. As the wing members fold forwardly, the brace members are arranged to cause a rearward portion of the draw bar to extend rearwardly from the forward portion and effect the telescopic action in the draw bar. A draw bar hitch lock linkage is provided to keep the draw bar compacted when the wing members are in the operating position. A hitch lock actuator is tied into the hydraulic system for the movement of the wing members into the transport position to permit the telescopic action of the draw bar in concert with the forward folding of the wing members.

The wheel arm axle extends between the castings pivots within cylindrical cavities located in the castings. External cylindrical surfaces concentric with the cavities rotatably support a pair of tower plates which include circular openings received over the external cylindrical surfaces. Casting symmetry allows the same part to be used interchangeably for either the right-hand or left-hand support.
