摘要: A pulsed current battery charging method functions to improve battery capacity characteristics of a liquid electrolyte electrical storage battery and prolong battery useful life. Pulses of charging current are applied optionally concurrent with conventional charging current. The pulse amplitude is of significant magnitude in relation to conventional small, finishing rate or trickle charge charging currents. Pulse amplitude, duration and pulse repetition rate are controllable. Apparatus designed to carry out this method includes power supply means, pulse current generating means and optional control means.

摘要: Batteries, having one or more cells, are charged by applying a charging current, either continuous direct current or pulsating direct current, having an average value during flow in excess of the nominal 1 hour rate of the cells as rated by the manufacturer. The batteries are intermittently discharged to depolarize the battery to enhance the chargeability of the battery. This discharging is at a rate also in excess of the nominal 1 hour rate, with the occurrence of the discharging being dependent upon the occurrence of a selected value of either battery terminal voltage, battery pressure, or battery temperature, one of which is monitored.

摘要: A method for charging storage cells or storage batteries by automatically switching a charger off or over to trickle charge when full charge is reached, comprising the steps of automatically determining the shape of the charging voltage curve as a function of time after the gassing voltage of the storage cell or storage battery to be charged has been reached, and switching the charging current off or over to trickle charge as soon as the increase of the charging voltage approaches zero in the course of time. The method further includes the steps of providing an auxiliary voltage by charging a capacitor with a charge current, automatically varying the charge current within pre-set limits and automatically simulating the shape of the charging voltage curve of the storage device as a function of time by means of the auxiliary voltage, after reaching the gassing voltage, such that the auxiliary voltage is a certain extent smaller than the charging voltage as long a difference quotient of the charging voltage exceeds the difference quotient of the capacitor voltage defined by a predetermined lower limit of the charge current of the capacitor after the same time. The charger is automatically cut off if the charging voltage equals or is lower than the capacitor voltage.

摘要: An electronic control system for battery chargers in which the charging current is switched on and off at predetermined intervals of time, and the magnitude of the charging current during the ON periods is controlled from a signal produced from the electronic control system. On switching OFF the charging current at each cycle of operation, the rate of decay of battery voltage is utilized to form a control signal, having first removed the voltage drop on switch off due to the ohmic resistance of the battery, known as the ''''I.R Drop.'''' Having extracted the ''''I.R Drop,'''' the remaining rate in decay in voltage representing the ''''Gas Drop'''' due to potential changes in the layer of gas on the active surfaces of the electrode, is compared with a standard reference voltage, the result of said comparison being utilized to vary the magnitude of the charging current in accordance with the state of charge of the battery as determined by the rate of decay of battery terminal voltage, due to the ''''Gas Drop.

摘要: A battery charger is equipped with a current adjusting device. A current sensor continuously measures the current output from the charger and feeds the readings to a current comparator. The terminal voltage of the battery is also continuously read and the readings are fed to a voltage comparator. A voltage reference feeds a constant reference voltage to the voltage comparator. The voltage comparator compares the battery voltage with the reference voltage and feeds a signal dependent upon the voltage difference and in accordance with a preselected program to a current reference. The current reference delivers a signal dependent on the output of the voltage comparator and in accordance with a preselected program to the current comparator. The current comparator to the the signal received from the current sensor tothe signal received from the current reference and provides an output signal to cause the current adjusting device to adjust the charging current to the values called for by the preselected program. A typical charge program which can be selected is a first charging mode at the initial charge rate of the battery until the battery voltage rises to a preselected value slightly below the gassing voltage. This is followed by a second charging mode wherein the charging current is gradually diminished so as to hold the voltage constant at the preselected value. When the charging current drops down to the finishing rate of the battery, a third mode commences wherein the current is held at the finishing rate regardless of further increase of the battery voltage. The charge can be terminated by a timing device set for total charge time or alternately for a predetermined charge period at the finishing rate.
