A novel single chip tuner integrated circuit (IC) for multiple video reception in a cable modem. The tuner circuit is well suited for use in cable modem systems adapted to implement the DOCSIS 3.0 specification which specifies multiple simultaneous video channel reception. The single-chip tuner integrated circuit comprises a plurality of tuner sub-circuits wherein each tuner sub-circuit is operative to generate a single output channel, determined in accordance with a tune commend input. The tune command input is used to generate a frequency reference signal that is input to a corresponding tuner sub-circuit. The frequency reference signal for a tuner sub-circuit is mixed with an input RF receive signal from the CATV input to the cable modem to generate a baseband channel. The baseband channel is subsequently filtered, amplified and input to the PHY circuit wherein undergoes analog to digital conversion (ADC) before being input to a baseband processor.

In the preferred embodiment, an identifier associated with the program's channel (52) is used to identify a source device (26, 28, 30 or 34). When a user selects a program (60 or 62) listed in displayed schedule information (50), the system (10) reads the source identifier attached to the program's channel (52). The system (10) then carries out an automatic switching/tuning such that the required source device (26, 28, 30 or 34) is input to the destination device (22), and a tuner is then tuned to the selected program's channel (52).

A tuning system is described for use with a television receiver which has channel selection keys on a keyboard for selecting a desired television channel. The system employs a frequency synthesizer for tuning the receiver's local oscillator to a selected television channel. For fine tuning, the system employs a fine tuning key which doubles as a channel selection key. Actuation of this key places the system in a fine tuning mode, and a logic circuit responds to actuation of a channel-up or channel-down key for causing the receiver to be fine tuned in the selected direction. In the preferred embodiment, fine tuning and channel selection are controlled by the logic circuit so as to occur during the receiver's vertical interval to eliminate digital switching noise from the receiver's image.

A signal detector for a signal-seeking television tuner system which renders the system unresponsive to image signals by detecting the audio subcarrier, video subcarrier, and horizontal sync signals and applying them to a coincidence gate to provide a recognition signal only in response to the reception of a proper RF television signal. Detection of a fourth signal parameter, magnitude, enables the system to reject proper RF television signals too weak for satisfactory viewing.

A video signal identification circuit provides a control signal to indicate the absence of either line or field pulse synchronizing signals within a video signal. The line and field pulse groups are separated from the input video signal and selected portions of the field pulse group are suppressed. The remaining line and field pulses are then used as a input to a monostable sawtooth generator which has a natural period exceeding a line period. The output of the sawtooth generator provides an input to a threshold circuit which outputs the control signal in response to the predetermined input signal.
