The image reading portion is configured to read an image of a document. The detection processing portion is configured to detect a face image included in a read image read by the image reading portion. The determination processing portion is configured to determine an orientation of the face image when the face image is detected by the detection processing portion. The rotation processing portion is configured to rotate the read image so as to cause the orientation of the face image determined by the determination processing portion to coincide with a predetermined specific direction when the orientation of the face image does not coincide with the specific direction.

The processing-target selection unit sets image data obtained by a conveyed-document reading unit as a processing target when the determination unit determines that the document on the platen is the left document, and inquires which image data obtained by the conveyed-document reading unit and a fixed-document reading unit, to be set as the processing target of the user when the determination unit determines that the document on the platen is not the left document.

During this information-extraction technique, a user of the electronic device may be instructed by an application executed by the electronic device (such as a software application) to point an imaging sensor, which is integrated into the electronic device, at a location on a document. For example, the user may be instructed to point a cellular-telephone camera at a field on an invoice. After providing the instruction and before the user activates an image-activation mechanism associated with the imaging device, the electronic device captures multiple images of the document by communicating a signal to the imaging device to acquire the images. Then, the electronic device stores the images with associated timestamps and spatial-position information, which is provided by a sensor which is integrated into the electronic device. After the user activates the image-activation mechanism, the electronic device analyzes the images to extract the information proximate to the location on the document.
