A combined altitude and height-above-ground indicator for an aircraft enables the altitude and the height of an aircraft to be displayed simultaneously. The combined indicator includes a first sensor and a second sensor which respectively sense altitude and height above ground, means for processing the information supplied by the first and second sensors, and means for displaying the sensed altitude and height-above-ground information by superimposing the altitude and height-above-ground information on the same scale against a pointer. The scale includes a transparent first part which represents a pressure-altitude display, and a second part which is a mask positioned under the first part so that it masks the background of the indicator for altitude levels which are below the measured height above ground. An advantage of the indicator is the ability to incorporate into an altimetric indicator adjusted by a pilot a device capable of warning the pilot of an abnormal situation such as unintentional closeness to the ground as a result of poor altimeter adjustment.

A sensor (1) for sensing the displacement of a body (12) comprises a deformable strip (2) enclosed in a chamber 3. The strip is constrained under longitudinal and transverse constraint such that end portions (9, 10) of the strip are parallel to a direction of movement of the body, the strip being locally deformed in the form of an S-bend. A magnet operable between the strip and the body varies the location of the S-bend along the length of the strip according to the position of the body. Optical or electronic sensors are provided for indicating the sensed position. The sensor may be used for sensing liquid levels or displacement of moving bodies such as valve elements particularly in hazardous environments including aircraft.

A vertical scale indicator has a scale, and a pair of mechanism assemblies positioned side-by-side with indices on flexible bands moving along opposite sides of the scale to indicate conditions. Each mechanism assembly comprises a mounting plate having thereon a follow up with a pulley, a servomotor driving the follow up and pulley in one direction, and a return spring assembly with a drum driven in the opposite direction by a spring. The flexible band is connected to the pulley and the drum and is moved in one direction by the motor and in the opposite direction by the return spring assembly.
