    摘要: Low friction or nearly frictionless compasses are provided. One compass embodiment includes a housing having a wall forming a chamber, the housing having a closed end and an open end. The compass includes a fluid disposed within the chamber. The compass includes a magnetized material floating in the fluid, wherein the magnetized material is operative to indicate Earth's magnetic north. The compass includes a protective face adjacent to the open end, wherein the protective face closes the open end of the chamber. Also provided is a compass that includes low friction material deposited on at least one side of the magnetized material and the adjacent closed end of the housing to create a nearly frictionless interface.

    摘要: A terrestrial magnetism responsive device adapted to be worked using a north or south seeking magnet in both north and south headings, the device including a housing having a north or south seeking magnet therein. The magnet is suspended adjacent one pole by a sensitive spring to permit the magnet to be movable horizontally, when released, from a north pointing position or a south pointing position. Secured and balanced on the seeking or free end of the magnet is a soft iron rod, generally at ninety degrees to the magnet and having substantially the same diameter as the magnet. The rod is balanced along with the magnet so that the magnet and rod together will move horizontally. The housing is rotatable on a plate by which it is held and during operation is fixed on the plate to be moved horizontally in the direction of an area to be explored.The method includes the releasing of a north or south seeking magnet in the housing so that it is free to move east and west on the spring as the housing in its fixed directional position is moved over the areas to be explored. As it is moved, the east/west diversions of the magnet and the exact locations of the diversions are recorded to be used in determining the location of surface and subsurface local structures which have local magnetic force fields causing the diversions of the magnet.

The need for a lift assembly to cushion the pivot point is eliminated while providing for an extremely rugged and versatile magnetic compass which will serve as a light, portable pocket transit capable of measuring horizontal and vertical angles as well as being used as a prismatic compass, level, clinometer, plumb or alidade.

    摘要: The present invention provides a compass comprising an at-least-partially-transparent housing having a top and a bottom, a vertically orientated, conical pivot bearing, and a magnetic detection means which is mounted on the vertically-oriented conical pivot bearing. The magnetic detection means thereby is capable of rotating in a substantially-horizontal plane. The magnetic field detection means is provided with a radially-extending, tilt-compensating, indicator device. The indicator device has at least one spacer element which is spaced from the magnetic field detection means, the spacer element projecting from the indicator device and being directed towards one of a top of the housing of the compass and a bottom of the housing of the compass. By this structure, the indicator device is guidable in the housing of the compass substantially-parallel to at least one of the top of the housing of the compass and the bottom of the housing of the compass by being mechanically pushed off at least from one of the top of the housing of the compass and the bottom of the housing of the compass by the spacer element when the housing is tilted. In addition, the spacer element which is arranged on the indicator device is oriented in respect to the top of the housing of the compass or the bottom of the housing of the compass in such a manner that an abutting of the indicator device against the housing of the compass can be prevented.
